ORINGTON A. WARE, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOLDER FOR NUMBER-PLATES.
Application led I une 2, 191.7.
To all whom t may concern."
Be it known that l, ORINGTON A. l/Vann, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Holder for Number- Plates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a holder for license number plates on automobiles.
Objects of my invention are to provide an efficient holder adapted to accommodate one number plate or an eXtra number plate and equipped with retaining springs so formed as to tightly clamp the plate or plates between the springs and the holder, and in addition to engage the plate or plates at the upper edges thereof, thereby effectually preventing accidental displacement of the plates.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder for the indicated purpose so formed and arranged as to facilitate the entrance and removal of a plate or plates.
yll`he nature of the invention and its advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of a holder for license number plates embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a front view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a top view;
Fig. l is a transverse vertical section of the holder without plates therein;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. l, but showing two number plates in position.
ln forming a holder in accordance with my invention a frame or body 10 is provided, preferably in the form of a flat plate. On the frame, at the ends, two pockets 11 are formed to receive the ends of a number plate, or plates, indicated at A, Fig. 5. The front 12 of each pocket 11 terminates short of the top of the pocket, thereby presenting a front opening indicated at 18.
In each pocket 11 a vertically disposed retaining spring 14 is secured. In the illustrated example the plate is formed of a shorter and a longer leaf riveted as indicated at 15. The lower end of the spring is Specification of Letters Patent.

suitably fastened to the front 12 as by rivets 16. The upper end 17 of each spring projects above the front 12 of the adjacent pocket so that the end may be conveniently grasped by the lingers at the opening 13 for flexing the spring to enter or remove a plate A. At the baclr of the plate 10 suitable means to secure the same in position is provided, there being bolts 18 in the illustrated construction. The bottom 19 of each pocket may be extended laterally inward beyond the front wall of the pocket to afford substantial support for the lower edges of the number plates. rllhe lower edge of the plate 10 has a cut-out 20, thereby affording clearance for the hand in raising a plate or plates, A, against the tension of the springs 1li.
t will be noted that the springs above their securing means are approximately Sii-shape so that at the approximate center thereof each spring presents a bowed form to clamp the plates between the springs and the face of the body 10, while at the upper end the spring curves rearwardly over the top of the plate 10 and, therefore, will overlie the upper edges of the plate or plates ft and prevent any possible accidental displacement.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new, and desire to secure by lietters Patent:
1. A holder of the class described comprising a body having end pockets to accommodate the ends of the plate or plates, and a vertically disposed spring in each pocket, each spring having a bowed portion between the upper and lower ends thereof adapted to bear aO'ainst a plate and clamp the same between the spring and the said body, the upper end of each spring being curved and extending laterally above the upper edge of the bot y to engage the upper edge of a plate or plates and retain the same against vertical displacement.
2. El holder of the class described adapted to accommodate a license number plate or plates, and a retaining spring secured to the holder, and having at the upper end of the holder a rearwardly projecting member overhanging the top of the holder to overlie the upper edge of a plate or plates and prevent vertical displacement thereof.
