GARMENT FASTENER.
Application filed April 10, 1926. Serial No. 101,124.
The invention relates to fasteners and more particularly to separable snap f garments and The invention provides a fastener the parts to be connected disengagement in the event securely holds against casual asteners for wearing apparel generally.
which of slack, and which may be easily and quickly attached to an article from for repeated use, light, cheap and effective.
While the drawings illustrate embodiment of the invention, it
or removed therethe fastener beiig a preferred is to be understood that in adapting the meansto meet specific needs and requirements,
the design may be varied and such other changes in the minor details of construction may the invention sorted to within the scope of be reas claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.
For a .full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the drawings hereto attached, in which,-
a fastener embodying Figure 2 is a detail having the compleinental parts Figure l is a detail View, illustrative of the invention,
view of the fastener placed one against the other to utilize the double snap,
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 isa view similar to Figure 2,
showing the parts of the fastener arranged nal View on the pin for a garment or other part to which the fastener is applied.
Corresponding and like parts to in the following description are referred and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters. rlhe fastener comprises parts, the one being a duplicate complementa-l of the other and each being preferably constructed of sheet metal;
A detail description of one of the parts or members will sufhce for a clear understanding of the invention. The fastener consists of a frame comprising a straight bar l, a bow 2 connected the ends of the bar l, centrally from the bar of the bow 3 of the bar l a tongue and in line with a sl in the bar l adjacent its inner e at its extremities to 3 projected l towards the middle and hooks 4 at opposite ends ot 5 formed dge. These spring tongue This stud is separate from the frame and riveted or otherwise attached thereto. A notch 7 is formed in the inner edge of the bow 2 opposite the extremity of the spring tongue 3 and is of a size to receive the stud 6 of a coinplenieiital part or member. The outer end of the stud 6 is made rounding so as to pass readilyl through the opening formed by the notch 7 Opposite sides of the stud 6 are notched7 as indicated at 8 to receive the end of the spring tongue 3 and an edgeportion of the bow 2 bordering upon the notch 7, whereby to positively hold the parts against casual disengagement, as shown most clearly in Figures 3 and 5.
A pin 9 is provided as means for securing the fastener to the fabric comprising a garment or other part and this pin has a flat head l0, preferably in the form of an eye. The pin 9 is of a length so that its point and head will engage under opposite hooks 4 which constitute vcatches or guards. To attach the fastener a portion of the fabric is folded and passed through the slot 5 and engaged by the pin 9 which is passed back and forth through the material, the parts being subsequently adjusted to admit of the ends of the pin lying beneath the catches or guards 4. The slot 5 is narrow and of a width to prevent the withdrawal of the pin 9 therethrough after being engaged with the folded edge portion of the fabric. The slot terminates at its ends a short distance from the inner ends of the guards 4 and the space between said guards and the adjacent side of the frame is such as to snugly receive the ends of the pin.
ll/hile the fastener may consist of a single member or part, nevertheless it is preferred to employ two like members or parts which may be arranged, substantially as shown in Figures 2 and 9, or as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5. As shown in Figures 2 and 3, two like members or parts are placed one against the other in reverse position, so that the stud of each passes through the opening of the other, thereby resulting in a double snap action. When two like parts or members are disposed substantially as shown in Figures 4 and 5, the stud of one engages the opening of the other and the two ineinbers face in the same direction and engage by a single snap action. The stud- 6 is located exterior to the slot 5. Any element or part provided with a stud similar to the stud 6 may be engaged with the opening 7 of a single member or part.
The parts of the fastener are engaged by forcing the head of the stud 6 through the opening' 7 and during this movement the end of the spring tongue 3 is pressed outwardly and when a notch 8 of the stud engages a portion of the bow 2 bordering upon the notch 7 the stud moves so as to enter the opening in a manner to receive the extremity of the tongue 3 and a portion of the bow opposite the tongue in the notches 8, as shown most clearly in Figures 3 and 5, thereby preventing casual disengagement of the parts. The engagement is thus effected by a snap action. To disengage the parts it is necessary to press the members away frein one another so as to spring the extremities of the tongues from the studs engaged thereby. Uien the parts are arranged substantially as shown in Figures 2 and 3, the fastening is doubly secure, butl ordinarily it would be found sufficient to arrange the parts, as indicated in Figures L and '5.
Having thus described the invention7 we claim: A
Vl. A fastener comprising a frame provided with a narrow fabric-receiving slot andhaving hooks at the ends of said slot and in line therewith to form guards to engage over the ends of apin employed for holding the fastener to the fabric or like part.
2. A fastener comprising a frame including a bar and a bow, the latter having a notch in its inner edge to provide a stud re ceiving opening, said bar having a narrow fabric receiving slot and provided with hooks at the ends of the slot and in line therewitlrto engage over the ends of a pin'. a spring tongue .projecting from the bar and terniinating adjacent the open side of the said notch and a stud projecting latex ally from the bar in line with the spring tongue.
1n testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
