SETH CURLIN, 0F HICKMAN, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES WILSON CURLIN, OF
HIGKMAN, KENTUCKY.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
- man, in the county of Fulton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Garment-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrlption of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to garment fasteners, the object thereof being to produce a cheap and simple device, the parts of whlch may be readily joined or articulated, and respectively and firmly secured 1n position upon the garment.
The parts of the device are preferably made of sheet metal, and they are so fashioned that, when united, they will he 111 substantially the same plane so that neither one of them will exert undue pressure upon the fabric of the garment and thereby Wear the same. Generally speaking the device consists of a male and a female member, the male member having a head which is of such thickness that it may be extended through a key-hole slot with which the other member is provided and then turned to a position in which the head will be seated against the wall at the larger end of the key-hole slot. The head of the male member is slightly defiected in order that the body thereof may extend beneath the female member when the two members are in interlocked or articulated positions.
Referring to the drawing- Figure 1 is a plan View showing the parts of the fastener in position upon a garment.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the male and the female member of the fastener detached from each other.
Fig. is a sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 3.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are views showing different modifications of the male member.
Fig. 8 shows a modified form of the securing means.
1 and 2 are the overlapped portions of a garment.
3 is the female and f is the male member of the fastener.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 313,1, 23, 1920, Application filed. .Tanuary 10, 1919. Serial No. 270,507.
The female member consists of a sheet of metal of suitable thickness and provided with a body portion 5 and an extended portion 6. The extended portion 6 is provided with a key-hole slot 7 for the reception of a portion of the male member. The parts of the female member lie in substantially the same plane. The body portion 5 is provided with slots 8, which are preferably formed by punching out portions of the metal within the margin thereof, the metal at the ends of the slots being bent at right angles to the body portion so as to constitute prongs 9 which, after being passed through the fabric of the garment, are to be bent outward into parallelism with the under face of the garment as shown at 10 in Fig. 1.
The male member is provided with a body portion which is a substantial duplicate of the female member in so far as its body portion 11 is concerned. This male member is provided with a head 12 which is secured to the body portion 11 by a shank 13, this shank being bent downward so as to cause the head 12 to lie in a plane below the plane of the female member. The shank 13 is slightly narrower than the wider portion of the key-hole slot of the female member, and the head 12 is slightly wider than said portion of the slot in order that it may interlock therewith. The thickness of the metal is less than the width of the narrower por tion of the key-hole slot through which said head may be passed edgewise in the act of uniting or articulating the parts of the fastener. After said head has been passed through the key-holt slot the male and female members will assume an alined position in respect to each other, and rest in substan tially the same plane.
The different forms of head for the male member, represented in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 all operate in substantially the same way to effectuate articulation with the slot of the fc male member, the differences being in respect to the angles of engagement between the head and the larger or outer end of the keyhole slot. In Fig. 5 the engaging parts of the head are disposed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the fastener; in Fig. 6 the engaging parts of said head converge at an obtuse angle, and in Fig. 7 said parts converge at an acute angle to each other.
These variations determine the angle at which the head of the male member w1ll be introduced edgewise into the key-hole slot of the female member. 7
The fastening device shown in Fig. 8 includes external prongs 14, and this form of fastening device may be employed, although the internally disposed prongs 9 are pref-- -erable.
hen the device is under tension the strain is transmitted to the threads around the punctures through which the prongs extend, provided the device contains no means for causing the strains to be transmitted to other parts of the fabric. here the prongs are punched from the inside of the body of the male or the female member and turned outward and clenched down the tensional strains are transmitted to parts of the fabric which are somewhat remote from the punctures, thusavoiding the tendency of male portion having a slot of key-hole formation, and a male portion having a comparatively narrow bent or curved shank and a head to engage said slot, and being thinner than the width of the slot, the bent shank permitting the body portions of both members to lie in substantially the same plane.
2. A fastener for garments comprising articulated male and female members, and provided with fastening means consisting of portions of metal extending outwardly from points within the margins of. said members.
3. A garment fastener including prongs composed of parts of metal punched from points within the margin of said fastener and capable of being bent outward when the fastener is to be secured to a. garment.
i. A metallic garment fastener having a body portion and an interlocking extension for engagement with another member, said body portion being provided with parallel slots having at their ends deflected portions of the metal.
In testimony whereof, I allix my signature.
