My invention is concerned with bags, and more especially with golf bags, and is designed primarily to produce a simple, inexpensive, efficient and attractive looking e structure whereby the handle can be quickly and easily adjusted in any position.

My invention is further concerned with a novel construction by which I secure the shoulder strap to the bag. lo My invention is finally concerned with a simple name-plate construction adapted to be applied to the bag, so that until it is sold, the name of the manufacturer may be displayed thereby,and after its sale at retail, the name of the owner may be inserted.

To illustrate my invention, I annex hereto a sheet of drawings, in which the same reference characters are used to designate identical parts in all the figures, of which,--

In carrying out my invention, I may apply it to any desired form of a golf bag, and I have shown the same as applied to a glf bag of the construction shown in my Patent No. 1,461,459, granted July 10, 1923, al-

though it will be understood that it may be applied to a bag of substantially different construction. The body portion 10 of the bag will be provided with the customary stiffening rods, and at its upper end-I have shown it as provided with a metallic annulus 11 having the curved-over top 12 thereof embracing the upper end of the cloth or leather body 10 and also of the leather stifl'ening stripl 18, the annulus 11, body 10 and stiffening'strip 13 being secured to- `gether by the rivets 14.

V' The basis for my adjustable handle support is a fastening strip 15, which is preferably constructed of sheet metal, and is preferably secured in place, together with the Voverlying covering strip 16, of leather, which I preferably employ, on the exterior of the body 10 by the rivets 17 located at the top and bottom of said strips. The leather cover strip 16 preferably entends up between the body 10 and the leather stiifening strip 13, and it is held in place by the rivets 14 and by the transverse stitches 18, seen in Fig. 1. The leather covering strip 16, where the same is employed, is preferably secured to the body 10 at its edges by the line of stitches 19 following the outline of said covering strip.

In its preferred form, the handle proper 20 is of any desired construction, and is provided at its ends with the links 21 pivoted therein and adapted to be secured in the transversely extending channels 22 and 23 formed in the body of what I call the handle strip 24, which strip preferably consists of a narrow strip of sheet metal of sufficient thickness to furnish the desired rigidity so that it will not bend under any ordinary usage. I preferably stamp out of the center of the body of this strip 24 a loop 25, which I utilize to secure the short strap 26 surrounding the bag, which strap is ordinarily used to secure an umbrella or some other such article in place on the exterior of the bag. 'Ihe uppermost link 21 is preferably permanently secured in the groove 22 by striking a tongue 27 out of the body of the strip 24 and bending it around the link 21 so as to prevent its removal from the channel 22. The other link need not be so confined in its channel, as when in vuse it is otherwise held in place, and when thehan; dle and handle strip are detached, they are held together by the tongue 27.

As a preferred means of securing the handle strip, and consequently the handle, in any desired adjustment on the fastening strip 15, I form in the upper end of said strip a plurality of threaded apertures 28, which are preferably formed by punching` themthrough the rear side of the strip and forming threads in the annular iianges thus formed about each of said apertures. To co-operate with these threaded apertures, I journal in the upper end of the handle strip 24 a screw 29, which is preferably held in place by having the annulus 30 formed thereon and operating 1n the annular recess 3l formed in the under side of the handle strip about the aperture through which the screw 29 passes. At the other end of the handle strip 24, I form the reduced hook end 32, which is adapted to enter the selected one of the narrow transverse slots 33 formed in the lower end of the fastening strip 15. l.When the handle is to be detached, for ad- `iustment or otherwise, the screw 29is turned until it is released from its threaded aperture, after which the handle and the handle strip 24 can be swungabout the hook 32 as a. fulcrum until said hook has reached a position in which it can be withdrawn from its aperture 83.

lWhere the cover strip 1G is employed, as I prefer, for the saire of appearances, I form in said strip apertures corresponding' in number and location to the apertures 28 and and for the Vpurpose of ornamentation, I place in each lof said apertures a polished metal eyelet 34, which adds not only to the appearance, but also to the dura bility of the device.

In the preferred form of my invention, I secure the shoulder strap 35 liii place at its upper end by having itsecured inthe link 36, which is held in place by the eyelet 37 formed by turning' over the upper end of the connecting piece 38, as seen in F 3. Ihis connecting' piece 38 is preferably formed with the curved transverse recess 39 therein adapted to fit snugly over the rounded end of the annulus 11, and its lower end may be secured in place by the beforementioned rivets 14, whichwill thus clamp the cloth and leather portions10, V16 and l13 between the tive metalli@ portions 1i and sa not the lower end, the strap 35 (3o-operates with a buckle 40 which is fulcrumed in a buckle base 41, which in turn is preferably secured by the preferably slotted screw 42, otherwise resembling the screw Q9, and threaded Vinto the aperture 28a located at the bottom of the strip 15. I preferably employ in connection Vwith the stiffening strip 13, or some other suitable portion of the back, the name plate shown in Figs. 1, 4 and 5, and which consists of the base 43 of sheet metal, provided with the apertures 44 by which it can be nailed or otherwise secured in place. On the upper surface of the base plate I form the plurality, preferably four, of tongues 45 turned up on the edge and adapted to, have the cap portion 46 sprung thereover. This'cap portion 46 is preferably elliptical in outline, as sceiuand is provided with `a central elliptical aperture 47 through which the card 48 interpored between the tongues 45 and the e of the cap portion 46 can be seen. vI preferably place on one side of the card 48 the naine of the manufacturer of -the bag, and when it is sold at retail, the salesman can call the buyei"s attention to the 'naine plate and spring ofi' the covei1 46, when the name or initials 'of the buyer can be printed on the other side of the card, which is then replaced with said upper side showingr through 'the aperture 47.

ilhile I have shown and described my invention as embodied in the form which I at present consider best adapted to carry out its purposes, `it will be understood that it is capable of modifications, and that I do not desire to be limited in the interpretation of the following claims except as may be necessitated by the state of the prior art.

, Viha't I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:

1. In a bag, the combination with the body, of a fastening strip secured thereon provided along the length thereof with a series of apertures, a handle, and means for detachably securing the ends of the handle in the selected two apertures so that relative movement between the handle 'and the bag does not tend to release the vlntn'dle from the bag.

2. In a bag, the combination with a body, of a fastening strip secured thereon provided along the length thereof with a series of apertures, a covering strip secured to the bag outside of the fastening strip and having a corresponding plurality of apertures registering with those of the fasteningstrip, a handle and means for detachably securing` the ends of the handle in the selected two apertures so that relative movement between the handle and the bagdoes not tend to release the handle from the bag.

3. In a bag, the combination with the body, vof a fastening strip secured thereon provided along the length thereof with a series of apertures, a handle, and means for securing` the ends of the handle in the selected two apertures, said means at one end comprising a screw jour aled in said end of the handle and adapted to engage the correspondingly threaded apertures of the fastening strip.

4. In a bag, the combination with the body, of a fasteningl Strip secured thereon provided along the length thereof with a series of apertures, a handle, and means for detachably securing the ends of the handle in the selected two apertures, said means at one end comprising a screw liournaled in said end of the handle and adapted to 'engage the correspondingly threaded apertures of the fastening strip, and at the other 'end coinprising a 'hook member secured to that end of the handle entering one of the apertures and 'adapted to be removed from Aits aperture when the other end of the handle is released and swung away from the bag.

5. In a bag, the combination with the body, of a fastening` strip secured thereon provided valong the length thereof with a series of apertures, a handle, and means for detachablysec'uring the ends of the handle llO in the selected two apertures, said means comprising at one end a hook member secured to that end of the handle entering one of the apertures and adapted to be removed from said aperture when the other end of the handle is swung away from the bag, and provided at said other end with removable means for entering one of said apertures.

6. In a bag, the combination with the body, of a fastening strip secured thereon provided along the length thereof with a series of apertures, a leather covering strip secured to the bag outside of the fastening strip and having a corresponding plurality of apertures provided with eyelets registering with those of the fastening strip, a handle, and means for detachably securing the ends of the handle in the selected two apertures so that relative movement between the handle and the bag does not tend to release the handle from the bag.

7. In a bag, the combination with the body, of a fastening strip secured there-on provided along the length thereof withha series of apertures, a leather' covering strip sewed at its edges to the bag outside of the fastening strip and having a corresponding plurality of apertures provided with eyelets registering with those of the fastening strip, a handle, means for detachably securing the ends of the handle-in the selected two apertures -so that relative movement between the handle and the bag does not tend to release the handle from the bag, and means for connec-ting the body, fastening and cover strips.

8. In a bag, the combination with the body, of a fastening strip secured thereon provided along` the length thereof with a series of apertures, a handle strip to which the handle is attached, and means for detachably securing the ends of the handle strip in the selected two apertures so that relative movement betweeirthe handle and the bag does not tend to release the handle from the bag.

9. In a bag, the combination with the body, of a fastening strip secured thereon provided along the length thereof with a series of apertures, a handle strip to which the handle is attached, and means for detachably securing the ends of the handle strip in the selected two apertures, said means consisting of a hook formed on one end of the strip and adapted to enter an aperture, and fastening means connected with the other end of the strip to enter another aperture.

10. In a bag, the combination with the body, of a fastening strip secured thereon provided along the length thereof with a series of apertures, a handle strip to which the handle is attached, and means for detachably securing the ends of the handle strip in the selected two apertures, said means consisting of a hook formed on one end of the strip and adapted to enter an aperture, and a screw journaled in the other end of the strip to co-operate with another threaded aperture.

In a golf bag, the combination with the body, of an annular stiening strip surrounding the top of the body, a relatively rigid annulus having a rounded upper surface, and a metallic shoulder strap fastener comprising a plate having at its central portion a rounded groove to fit over the rounded surface of the annulus and at its top a tubular portion to receive a link, and at its bottom riveted to the stiffening member and body.

12. In a golf bag, the`combination with a body, of an annular stifening member surrounding the top of the body, a relatively rigid annulus having a rounded upper surface with a downwardly extending flange on the inside of the bag, and a metallic shoulder strap fastener comprising a plate having at its central portion a rounded groove to lit over the rounded surface of the annulus and at its top a tubular portion to receive a link and at its bottom riveted to the stiffening member, body, and downwardly extendn ing flange of the annulus.

13. In a golf bag, the combination with a handle strip having a pair of transversely extending channels formed therein, a hook at one end and a screw journaled in the other en-d, of a pair of links mounted in said channels, and a handle connected at its ends to said links.

14. In a golf bag, the combination with a handle strip having a pair of transversely extending channels formed therein, a longitudinally extending loop formed therein, a hook at one end and a screw ournaled in the other end, of a pair of links mounted in said channels, a handle connected at its ends to aid links, and a strap passed through the oop. v

15. In a golf bag, the combination with a handle strip having a pair of transversely extending channels formed therein, a longitudinally extending loop formed therein, and detachable fastening means at the ends thereof, of a pair of links mounted in said channels, a handle connected at its ends to aid links, and a strap passed through the oop. v

16. In a bag, the combination with the body, of a fastening strip secured thereon, a handle strip to which the handle is attached, and means for detachably securing the ends of the handle in any desired position so that relative movement between the handle and the bag does not tend to release the handle from the bag.
