Be it known that I, GEORGE E. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in that class of badges comprising a main body portion for the displaying thereon of an inscription, insignia, orotherdesirable design, provided at the back with a pin for the attachment of the badge upon a garment.

The invention therefore has for its principal objects to provide an improved badge and a novel construction of top bar or headpiece, principally made in the manner to be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The invention also has for a further object to provide a novel construction of pin for the attachment of the same to a badge and, further, the novel arrangement and construction of various parts of said pin and the top bar or headpiece of the badge, whereby a simple and cheap as well as an ornamentally-constructed device is the result, the parts of which can be easily and quickly assembled to provide-a neat badge to be worn on the lapel or any other part of a garment.

The invention therefore consists in the improved badge and novel construction of headbar or top piece and pin therefor, all to be hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, my invention consists in such novel arrangements and combinations of parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be fully described in the accompanying specification and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

The invention is. clearly illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are a face and back view, respectively, of a ribbon badge and one form of top bar or headpiece made according to the principles of my invention. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the top bar or headpiece on an enlarged scale, said section being taken on line 3 3 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section of the top bar or headpiece, said section being taken on line 4 4 in Fig. 3 looking inthe direction of arrow 00. perspective view of the preferred form of pin to be used with said top bar or headpiece. Figs. (iand 7 are a face and back view, respectively, of a modified form of top bar or headpiece, but still made according to the principles of my invention. Fig. 8 is a horizontal section taken on line 8 8 in Fig. 7 with the pin omitted, and Fig. 9 is a vertical cross-section taken on line 9 9 in said Fig. 7.

.Fig. 10 is a horizontal section of a top bar or headpiece made according to my invention, illustrating its use with an ornamental frame.

Similar letters of reference are employed in all of the said above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

In said drawings, Aindicates the complete top bar or headpiece for a ribbon b. In Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the top bar or headpiece is represented as being struck up from a blank a, of sheet metal or any other suitable material, said blank being suitably ornamented on its face and having an ornamental configuration in outline of any desirable shape. The central portion of the main surface of said blank a is preferably provided with a suitable opening a, through which may be seen the reading-surface a of another blank d of cardboard, celluloid, or other material. Upon the face a can be printed or otherwise arranged a word or words or an insignia, emblem, picture, or the like. At or near the opposite ends of said blank a, which forms the top bar or headpiece, as above set forth, I have arranged a pair of backwardly-projecting lugs d each lug having a receiving portion or loop a for the respective curved or bent ends 0 and c of a pin-bar c, the said receiving portions a in the construction set forth in said Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, being sufficiently closed down to secure said blank of against the back of the top bar or headpiece and tooperatively hold and retain the pinbar 0 in place on the back of said top bar.

The said pin-bar 0 consists, essentially, of a main body portion a, on which may be arranged the folded-over portion 1) of the rib bon b, as shown, the said body portion 0,

Fig. 5 is a s as above stated, having at one end a curved portion 0 and at the opposite'end a curved portion 0 Extendingin an upwardlyand inwardly inclined direction toward the middle of the said main body portion 0 is an arm 0 having at its free end a curved portion c bent at an angle to said arm o substantially in the manner illustrated, to form a pin-guard. The opposite end portion 0 of said body portion 0 has an upwardly and inwardly extending arm 0, which is connected with an arm 0 preferably by a curved portion 0 all arranged so that the arms a and e and the main portion 0, when the portions 0 and c of the body portion 0 have been sprung under the receiving portions or loops a of the lugs a, will rest directly against the back of the top bar or headpiece A, with an arm 0 extending in a direction away from the back of the said top bar or headpiece A and having a spring action, whereby the pin can be readily forced under the looped pinguard c substantiallyas illustrated in Figs. :3 and 3 of the drawings. The free end of said pin-bar c is preferably pro vided with a pin-point c for forcing the pinbar 0 readily through the fabric when the badge is to be attached to a garment or on a display-card.

From the above description it will be seen that the construction of the various parts is very simple and can be readily assembled, the pin being held in place without the use of solder, which is objectionable during the process of; manufacture while putting the finished parts together on account of the heat required, and which is especially objectionable when the parts are covered with celluloid or similar material, as will be presently set forth.

In lieu of the construction of top bar or headpiece described in the above the said top bar or headpiece may be made, as clearly indicated in Figs. (3 to 10, inclusive, to adapt it more especially in use with a celluloid or other suitable covering (1, which is usually transparent, so as to permit of the placing therebeneath of a plate or blank e, which may be provided with an inscription, emblem, or design, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. In said Figs. 6, 7, 8, and 9, (LG indicates a suitably-shaped shell or plate of metal, which is preferably formed 7 with an inwardly-projecting marginal rim or head (i thereby forming a chambered portion a in the back of said shell or plate. Upon this shell I prefer to place the plate or blank 6, usually provided with an inscription, design, or the like, as stated, and upon this I place a covering (1, of celluloid or any other similar material. It must be understood,however,thatthe plate orblank 0 maybe dispensed with and that an inscription, emblem, design, or picture may be produced directly upon such celluloid orothersimilar covering, if desired. In the construction represented the marginal rim 0 of said plate or blank 6 and the marginal edge (1 of said covering (1 are both arranged over and underneath the said marginal rim or head a of the shell or plate a", where said edges are held fast and pulled taut by the surroundingand inwardlyextending marginal edge a of a back-plate a, as clearly illustrated; but of course it will be clearly evident that the said plates a and a" may be connected and secured together in any other well-known manner. In this construction of back-plate a the latter is pro vided at or near its ends with holding loops or lugs a, which loops or lugs are forced up from said back-plate and extend back therefrom to provide a pair of receiving portions for the reception of the curved end portions and (1 0E the main body portion a of the pinbar 0. Vhen thus made the inner surfaces of said loops or lugs a are curved, thereby practieally forming chambers (U with the side walls a, which, however, are cut away, as at a, for the entrance of said portions of the pin-bar 0 into said chambers by springing the same beneath said lugs or loops a, and then by the spring-pressure of the parts of said spring against the side walls (0 being firmly retained in placc,as will be clearly understood. In some cases, if found desirable, the backplate a may be provided with suitable loops or lugs, as a, whereby said shell or plate a and the back-plate a may be arranged in a box-like frame f, having a marginal projecting edge f fitting around said parts and a back f provided with slots or openingsf", through which the said lugs or loops a are passed, so as to extend beyond the back of said frame, forsecuring the pin 0 in position in the manner hereinabove described, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Fig. 10.

Instead of securing the upper end of the ribbon 1) directly upon the main body portion 0' of the pin 0, as indicated in Figs. 2, 3, and t, the upperend of theribbon can be arranged and clamped between the marginal edges of the plates a and a", as clearly indicated in Figs. 7 and t).

From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a neat and simply-eonstructed top bar and pin attachment for badges the parts of which can be quickly assembled and with a great reduction in the cost of manufacture.

It will be obvious that changes may be made in the various arrangements and combinations of parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the scope of this invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as herein described and illustrated, nor do I confine myself to the details of the construction of such parts.

Having thus described my in vcution, what I claim is- 1. A badge-bar comprising a body portion having inwardly-projecting lugs or loops at or near the ends thereof, said lugs or loops having openings at their inner ends and provided with side walls, and a pin-bar provided with holding portions arranged and retained in said lugs or loops in contact with the side walls thereof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A badge-bar comprising a body portion having holding lugs or loops, and a pin-bar having portions thereof connected with said lugs or loops, said pin-bar consisting, essentially, of a main body portion, a curved end portion at each end of said main body portion, an inwardly extending arm portion connected with each of said curved end portions and arranged in the same plane with the main body portion, or approximately so, and extending towardeach other in a direction parallel with the longitudinal axis of said body portion, and a pin-point on one of said inwardly=extending arm portions, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

8. A badge-bar comprising a body portion having holding lugs or loops, and a pin-bar having portions thereof connected with said logs or loops, said pin=bar consisting, essentially, of a main body portion, a curved end portion at each end of said main body portion, an inwardly-extending arm portion connected with each of said curved end portions and arranged in the same plane with the main body portion, or approximately so, and a pinpoint on one of said inwardly-extending arm portions, and a ribbon, having a looped or turned-over edge arranged over the main body portion of said pin, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. A badge-bar comprising a body portion having inwardly-projecting lugs or loops at or near the ends thereof, a pin-bar consisting, essentially, of a main body portion and curved end portions, said curved parts being arranged in and retained beneath said lugs or loops, arm portions connected with said curved parts extending inward toward each other in the vertical plane of the main body portion, or approximately so, a pin-guard on one of said arm portions and a pin on the other of said arm portions, arranged to be forced beneath said pin-guard, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. A badge-bar comprising a body portion having inwardly-projecting lugs or loops at or near the ends thereof, a pin-bar consisting, essentially, of a main body portion and curved end portions, said curved parts being arranged in and retained beneath said lugs or loops, arm portions connected with said curved parts extending inward toward each other in the vertical plane of the main body portion, or approximately so, a pin-guard on one of said arm portions and a pin on the other of said arm portions, arranged to be forced beneath said pin-guard, and a ribbon, having a looped or turned-over upper edge arranged over the main body portion of said pin-bar, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. A badge-bar comprising a body portion having inwardly-projecting lugs or loops at or near the ends thereof, a pin-bar consisting, essentially, of a main body portion and curved end portions, said curved parts being arranged in and retained beneath said lugs or loops, arm portions connected with said curved parts extending inward toward each other in the vertical plane of the main body portion, or approximately so, a pin-guard on one of said arm portions at a right angle thereto, or approximately so, and a pin connected with the other of said arm portions having a backwardly-extending part to throw said pin out of said vertical plane of the main body portion of the pin-bar, and its pin-point in line with the pin-guard for its reception therebeneath, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7. Abadge comprisingashell or plate having a curved marginal rim or bead, a backplate having an inwardly-curved marginal rim or bead, arranged beneath the marginal rim or head of said shell or plate, lugs or loops on said back-plate, having side walls, and a pin-bar 0, consisting, essentially, of a straight body portion 0, curved end portions connected therewith arranged beneath said lugs or loops in spring contact with the side walls thereof, inwardly-extending arm portions connected with said curved parts, a pinguard on one of said arm portions, and a pin connected with the other of said arm portions, and extending backwardly therefrom at the point of connection between said arm portion and the said pin to form a springbearing for said pin, and permit the insertion of its free end beneath said pin-guard, sub

stantially as and for the purposes set forth.

8. The herein-described pin-bar c, consisting, essentially, of a main body portion 0', provided with curved end portions, an arm 0 connected with one of said curved portions, and an arm 0 connected with the other of said curved portions, said arms 0 and c and the main body portion 0" all being in the same vertical plane, or approximately so, a pinguard at the free end of said arm 0 extending at a right angle therefrom, or approximately so, an arm 0 connected with and forming a part of said arm 0 extending in a direction away from the same in a plane at right angles to the vertical plane through said body portion 0' and said arm portions 0 and c and said arm 0 having a pin-point at its free end,substantially as and for the purposes ginal rim or bead, and a back-plate having a marginal rim or head, arranged beneath the marginal rim orbead of said shell or plate, inwardly-projecting side and end portions on said back-plate forming receiving-chambers, said side portions extending inwardly in a direction parallel with the longitudinal central axis of said badge-bar, or approximately so, and a pin-bar, consisting, essentially, of
