UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVIN B. IVILMARTH, OF ATTLEBORO FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO V. H. BLACKINGTON AND COMPANY, OF ATTLEBORO FALLS, MAS- SACHUSETTS, A FIRM.
BADGE.
SEEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,828, dated October 7, 1902. Application filed July 2,1902. Serial No. 114,185. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN B. WILMARTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro Falls, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has reference to improvements in badges, and particularly to improvements in badge bars or plates adapted to be supplied with a filling carrying a name or inscription.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved badge plate or bar the parts of which may be readily assembled to secure the filling firmly in place.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the back plate and the frame, whereby the filling is secured in place.
The invention also consists in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 represents an obverse perspective view of the parts of the badge in separated position. Fig. 2 represents a reverse view thereof in the assembled position.
Similar numbers of reference designate c0rresponding parts throughout.
In carrying this invention into practice I form a back plate having any suitable or desirable outline and furnished with a more or less convex central panel 5 and a raised bead or border 6. At intervals around the edge portion of the plate are formed openings 7 7, which extend somewhat into the material of the central panel 5. On the back of the plate are fixed the securing-pin 8 and the banner or ribbon bar 9, both of any usual and wellknown construction.
The filling securing frame comprises a frame or beading 10, having the general outline of the beading or border 6 of the back plate, being concaved on its rear surface to fit snugly over said heading and having holding-prongs 11 11, extending from the inner edge and adapted to register with the openings 7 7, as is shown in the drawings.
In assembling this device for use as a badge a filling of cloth, paper, ribbon, or any other suitable material is preferably used, being cut to the approximate shape and size of the outline of the heading 6 and placed against the face of the plate. The frame is now brought to position, the prongs 11 11 registering with the openings 7 7 of the plate and working through said openings until the concave surface of the heading 10 is brought to bear against the edge portion of the filling,- the prongs 11 11 being then bent down into place over the rear surface of the plate, as is shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The purpose of the frame is that of providing an ornamental securing device for the filling, which must act on the edge portion of the filling to nip or clamp the same against the back plate. This purpose is effectively carried out by the use of the headings 6 and 10 and by the extension of the holding-prongs from the inner edge of the beading 10, as by this means the inner edge of the beading 10 may be drawn tightly against the filling to press the same against the back plate, while any springing of the frame is thus also prevented.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A badge comprising a back plate having a raised edge and a series of openings extending through said edge, and a frame having a concave back to fit said raised edge and a series of.prongs, extending from the inner edge of said frame and adapted to register with said openings and to be bent to secure the frame to the plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDIVIN B. IVILMARTH.
