SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,368, dated June 30, 1903.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES E. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Buckles; and I de-' clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to buckles of the tongueless class primarily adapted for belts, and has for its object the provision of such a buckle of novel, simple, and efficient character.

With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and

- pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the buckle-frame of skeleton form, crossed by the keeper-bar A. The front bar B of this frame has a rabbeted rear edge or rabbet at 19, forming a depressed or lower binding edge I).

C is the securing or clamping bar for the strap or belt, pivoted at one end portion thereof to one of the lateral frame-bars C in a groove 0' thereof adjacent to the front framebar and having a spring-loop c at its opposite end portion arranged to detachably engage the other lateral frame-barC and lying within a similar groove 0 thereof. This bar C has a path of movement in a plane at right angles and transverse to the plane of the buckle and is adapted to be swung within the recess 1) of bar B, lapping over binding edge 6 above the same, but separated from the bottom of the recess by an interval to allow passage of the belt therebetween, and is of thin character, being usually stamped from sheet inetal,'its forward edge e, in connection with edge b',causingthe belt to take a double or locking turn, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, securely preventing slippage and without injury todelicate fabrics.

Inasmuch as the bar C lies within the buckleframe, it is protected by the frame from injury or displacement through hard knocks or rough usage. The spring-loop at the end of the bar is readily disengaged from the buckle-frame, when the clamp-bar may be thrown backwardly entirely out of the way and leaving free the opening between the front frame-bar and the keeper-bar. In use the end of the belt or strap lies close to the buckle, there being no protuberances or projecting parts to produce unsightly bulging.

My buckle may be cast, stamped from sheet metal, or made of wire. Its construction and front frame-bar having a thin depressed rear edge, of the adjacent clamping-bar hinged-at one end, and having a detachable connection with the buckle-frame at the other end, said clamping-bar having a thin forward edge and cooperating with said front bar to secure the belt in place, substantially as specified.

In a buckle, the combination with the front frame-bar having a rabbeted rearedge, of the thin clamping-bar hinged at one end thereof, having a detachable spring engagement with the buckle-frame at the other end thereof, and adapted to lap the rabbet of said front bar, said bars cooperating to secure the belt in place, substantially as specified.
