Be it known that I, RUDOLPH LIEBMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Mirrors, &e.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the aceompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates generally to improvements in that class of metallic frames for pictures, medallions, mirrors, and the like which are provided with an extension serving as a handle for the frame which surrounds such mirror, medallion, picture, and the like.

My present invention has for its principal object to provide a neat, simple, and cheaplyconstructed frame of metal and of the character and for the purposes hereinafter more particularly set forth, the frame being bent or struck up in metal having resilient properties and being provided with handle extensions which are placed side by side and are held or secured together by means of a suitable elamping or holding means, whereby the said combined frame and holder can be arranged about the marginal edge of a mirror, medallion, picture, or the like.

A further object of this invention is to provide a novel frame and holder for a mirror, medallion, picture, or the like provided with separable handle members and a clamping means detachably connected with the free end portions of the same to permit of the removal of the combined frame and holder from its engagement with such mirror, medallion, picture, or the like.

With the various objects of my present invention in view the same consists, primarily, in the combined frame and holder for mirrors, medallions, pictures, and the like to be hereinafter more fully described, and, furthermore, this invention consists in the general arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be fully set forth in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim, which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined frame and holder embodying the principles of this invention, illustrating its use with a pocket-mirror. Fig. 2 is a face view of the said combined frame and holder with the clamping or holding means detached from the end portions of the handle members. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the said combined frame and holder and an edge view of a mirror about which the frame is arranged, the said section being taken on line 3 3 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 4 et in said Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one form of clamping or holding device to be used upon the free ends of the handle members. Fig. 6 is a face view of a mirror and a combined frame and holder therefor provided with a clamping means for the handle members, said clamping means being of a modified construction; and Fig. 7 is a horizontal section of the same, said section being taken on line 7 7 in said Fig. 6.

Similar characters of reference are employed in the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference character 1 indicates any usual construction of mirror, medallion, or the like, such as is inclosed in asuitable shell 2 of metal or any other material, that indicated in Figs. 1, 3, and 6 of the drawings being a pocket-mirror of the usual and wellknown construction.

The combined frame and holder made according to the principles of my presentinvention is indicated by the reference character 3, the same being made from suitable metal which is bent or otherwise made in the combined frame and holder, preferably of the configuration shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. This combined frame and bolder comprises a ring-shaped portion or main body 4, which is bent or curved at two closely-located points, as at5, and then terminates in two extensions 6 of any suitable lengths and preferably made with outwardly-extending curved parts 7 and with a free end portion 8 at the end of each curved part 7, substantially as illustrated. The inner portions of the several parts which go to make up this frame are channeled, as at 9 and 10, (see Figs. 1, 3, and 1,) whereby great strength and an outward ornamental-finish of the combined frame and holder is the result. To arrange the said frame in its operative relation with the mirror or medallion 1, the channeled part 9 of the said ring-shaped body ekis placed over the marginal bead of the shell 2, in which the mirror is arranged, or said body 4 may be placed directly over the marginal edge of a medallion or the like, and then by forcing the two spring-like extensions 6 toward each other, so as to bring their free end portions 8 closely togetherand preferably in overlapped relation, a suitablyconstrnctcd clamping or holding means is forced upon the said free end portions, upon which the said clamping or holding means is then retained by the tendency of the two extensions 6 to spring apart and whereby a complete handle is provided, as will be clearly understood. At the same time the said holding or clamping means serves as an ornament to the end of the handle, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawings. One form of such clamping or holding means is preferably a hollow ball or spherical shell 11, which is provided with an opening 12 and radially-arranged slots 13, which permit of the overlapping end portions 8 when the extensions 6 are pressed together to be readily entered into the hollow interior of said ball or spherical shell 11 to bring said end portions in firm holding engagement with the marginal edges 14:, as will be clearly understood.

In Figs. 6 and? I have illustrated a slightlymodified construction of combined frame and holder and a holding or clamping means therefor, the said holding or clamping means in the construction represented in said Figs. 6 and 7 being permanently affixed upon the end portions of this form of frame, while the said ball or spherical shell 11 (represented in said Figs. 1

and 5 of the drawings) is detachably connected with the free end portions of said extensions 6. The combined frame and holder represented in said Figs. 6 and 7 comprises a ring-shaped portion or main body 15, which is bent or curved at two closely-located points, as-16, and then terminates in the two extensions 17, provided at their free end portions with the inwardly-curved ends 18, as clearly indicated in the dotted outline in said Fig. 6 of the drawings. The clamping or holding device in this case consists of a pair of plates or shells 19 and 20, preferably of the configuration shown, one of which, as 19, is made with a turned-over or bead-like marginal edge 21,

which embraces the marginal edge 22 of the other plate or shell 20 and is clamped down upon the same to firmly hold the said plates or shells 19 and 20 in their clamped relation upon the said extensions 17.

From the foregoing description it will be evident that I have devised a combined frame and holder for the purposes stated which is of a simple construction and may be of any ornamental configuration, and, furthermore, a combined frame and holder has been produced which can be arranged in its relative position about the marginal edge of a mirror, medallion, picture, or the like without the use of solder or rivets, whereby the cost of construction is greatly reduced.

I am fully aware that changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as described in the specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the saic parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with an article, as a mirror, medallion, or the like, of a combined frame and holder made from spring metal and comprising amain body adapted to be arranged in position about the marginal edge of said article, a pair of oppositely-located spring-like extensions forming a handle integrally connected with the said main body, each extension having an outwardly-extending part, a lower inwardly-extending portion, and an outwardly-extending free end, all of the said parts having a tendency normally to separate in opposite directions, and a holding device upon the free ends of the extensions, all arranged for tightly closing the said main body about the marginal edge of the article, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination, with an article, as a mirror, medallion, or the like, of a combined frame and holder made from spring metal and comprising a main body adapted to be arranged in position about the marginal edge of said article, apair of extensions extending from the said main body, and a holding or clamping device arranged upon the free ends of said extensions and said extensions and holding or clamping device forming a handle, said holding or clamping device consisting, essentially, of a hollow ball provided with an opening and radial slots, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
