Be it known that I, GUSTAVE REHMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instrument or other Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My present invention has reference to improvements in pocket or other suitable cases for the placing therein of surgical instruments, but which are also applicable to other .uses, such as the carrying therein of cigarettes and other articles.

The invention relates more particularly to a novel construction of pocket or other case provided with a supporting plate or plates made of a resilient material removably arranged in the case, said supporting plate or plates preferably being provided with suitable holding means for retaining the surgical instruments or other articles in place upon said plate or plates after being removed from the body of the case. i

The principal object of this invention therefore is to produce a pocket or other case for the purposes above enumerated which shall be neat in appearance and shall be of a simple, strong, and durable construction, providing a case for more readily presenting the articles therein by quickly removing the supporting plate or plates from the case to facilitate the removal of the articles from the plate for their proper manipulation.

My present invention therefore consists in the novel construction of pocket or other case embodying the principles hereinabove mentioned and of the character to be more fully described in the following specification.

This invention consists, furthermore, in the several novel arrangements and combinations of the various parts, as Well asin the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim appended to this specification.

The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case with which my invention is to be used. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the case with the pocketsections in open relation to each other, illustrating in plan in one of said sections or in the body of the case a removably-placed supporting-plate for carrying surgical instruments. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken on line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section taken on line 44 in said Fig. 2, illustrating in connection therewith the holding arrangement of the resilient supporting-plate for carrying surgical instruments; and Fig. 5 is a similar section illustrating the manner of removing said resilient supportingplate from the case or the manner of replacing it in said case.

Similar letters of reference are employed in all of the said above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring to the said drawings, A indicates the complete case,which consists, essentially, of a body a and a cover a, provided with the usual forms of perforated ears or lugs a suitably connected by means of a pin, whereby the sections a and a are pivotally connected and can be closed down upon each other, as will be clearly evident. The body or section Ct, as will be seen from the several figures of the drawings, is provided on the front with a lug or pin I), having a head I). Suitably secured to the front face a of the cover or section a, by means of a pin or pins 0, is a sliding catch 0. The construction of this catch is more particularly represented in Fig. 1. The said catch 0 consists, essentially, of a plate-like body having a pair of downwardly-extendin g portions 0 and 0 one of which, as 0 having a stud-like projection cflwhich extends toward the portion o In this manner a vertical opening or slot 0 is formed, which communicates with a laterallyextending slot or opening 0 substantially as illustrated. \Vhen the two sections a and a of the case A are to be closed, the catch 0 is passed over the pin or stud b and causing the head 1') of the latter to engage with the edges of the parts which surround said slot or opening 0, whereby the catch 0 will cause the holding or locked engagement of the cover-section a fits when closed, is a strip or bandf. Said strip or band f extends part way down the inner surfaces of the sides of said body-section a toward the bottom of the case A, thereby forming a surrounding shoulder f, substantially as illustrated. Loosely and removably arranged within said bodysection a is a supportingplate e of any desirable configuration, said plate being provided with any number of suitably-placed clamping or-holding lugs or cars, as e', be-

tween which can be held a syringe and other surgical instruments, or said plate 6 may be provided with any other desirable means for holding cigarettes or other articles of manufacture in position thereon. The said plate 6 is resilient, being preferably stamped or struck up from spring metal, and it is removably held in place beneath the shoulder f of the surrounding band or strip f by means of the edge e on an upwardly-extending portion 6- at one end of the plate 6 and a shoulder 6 connected with an upwardly-extending portion e at the opposite end of said plate 6, substantially as illustrated in said Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The said portion e is also: preferably provided above the shoulder 6 with a suitably shaped finger piece e", by. means of which when adirect pressure is applied against'said finger-piece, as indicated in Fig 5, the plate 6 can be sufficiently bent to permit of its removal from holding engagement with the shoulderf of the band or stripfto remove the plate 6 from the section a of the caseAor for forcing it into its holding position in the body of said case, as will be clearly understood.

From the above description it will be seen that a neat and simply-constructed case provided with a removable supporting-plate for surgical instruments or other articles of manufacture is the result, which can be conveniently carried in the pocket and from which the plate 6, with the instruments thereon, can be readily removed for the more convenient handling of the instruments.

From an inspection of the drawings it will be evident that by slight changes in the outline or configuration of the plates 6 one or more of such plates can be removably held in place beneath the shoulder f of the band or strip f, the plates 6 being of sufficient resiliency that they can be easily forced in position in the case A and can be just as quickly removed therefrom when required.

,Of course I am aware that changes may be made in the several arrangements and combinations of the various parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the scope of my presentinvention. Hence I do not limit myinvention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as herein shown and described, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1.. As a new article of manufacture, a case, consisting of a pair of hinged sections, and a ledge or projection on one of said sections, extending above the surrounding upper and free edge of said section to provide a receiving-flange for the other section, a resilient supporting-plate in said section having said ledge, and holding portions on said plate adapted to be sprung under said ledge and hold said plate in detachable engagement with said section, substantially as and for the W purposes set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a case, consisting of a pair of hinged sections, and a ledge or projection on one of said sections, extending above the surrounding upper and free edge of said section to provide a receiving-flange for the other section, a resilient supporting-plate in said section having said ledge, an upwardly-extending holding portion at one end of said supporting-plate, and an upwardly-extending holding portion at the other end of said plate, adapted to be brought in spring-like holding engagement with the under shoulder of said ledge, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a case, consisting of a pair of hinged sections a and a, a band or stripf in said section a forming a shoulder f a supporting-plate e in said section a, an upwardly-extending holding portion 6 at one end of said plate e, and an upwardly-extending holding portion 6 at the other end of said plate e, said holding portions being adapted to be brought in springlike holding engagement with the shoulder of said strip or band f, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a case, consisting of a pair of hinged sections a and a, a band or strip f in said section a forming a shoulder f, a supporting-plate e in said section a, an upwardly-extending holding portion 6 at one end of saidplate e, and an upwardly-extending holding portion 6 at the other end of said plate 6, said holding portion (2 having a straight edge e and said holding portion 6 having a shoulder 6 said edge e and said shoulder 6 being adapted to be brought in spring-like holding engagement with the shoulder of said strip or band f, and a fin ger-piece e above said shoulder e on said holding portion 6 all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a case, consisting of a pair of hinged sections, and a ledge or projection on one of said sections, to provide a shoulder at or near the upper and free edge of said section, a supporting-plate in said section, an upwardly-extending holding portion 2 at one end of said plate, and an upwardly-extending holding portion e at the other end of said plate, adapted to be brought in spring-like holding engagement with the shoulder formed by said ledge, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a case, consisting of a pair of hinged sections, and a ledge or projection on one of said sections, to provide a shoulder at or near the upper and free edge of said section, a supporting-plate in said section, an upwardly-extending holding portion e at one end of said plate, an up- GUSTAVE REHMANN.
