D. v. coNKLlN A ATTACHABLE MATCH BOX Filed Jan. 24, 1927 Patented oa. 30, 192s.y
DONALD V. CONKLIN, 0F ALHAMBRA, CALIFORNIA.V
ATTACHABLE MATCH BOX.
Application filed January 24, 1927. Serial No. 162,958.
toA a package of cigarettes, or the like, in such manner that whenever a smoker withdraws his cigarette package from a pocket, his match box will also be at hand.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a removably attachable match box, comprising a leather or other flexible body with sheet-metal or other guard or enclosing frame, a retaining finger or equivalent element being resiliently and/or otherwise relatively removable, and one of said elements being adapted to provide a striking surface for matches.
Other objects of my invent-ion, including the use of a pivoted or sliding plate, or its equivalent, to hold an attached match bon toy a cigarette package, and including the optional use of a metallic band to hold a flexible flap or flaps or equivalent closure elements in a match protecting-position, may be best appreciated from the following description of an illustrative .embodiment thereof, taken in connection with the appended claims and accompanying drawings, in which i Fig. 1 is a. side elevational view, showing a match box as attached to a cigarette package, or the like.
Fig. 2 is a top view, taken substantially as indicated by the arrow 2, with a part of a cigarette package broken away.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view, taken substantially as indicated by the arrow 3 of Fig. 1. a
Fig. 4 is an edge or an end elevational View, taken substantially as indicated by the arrow 4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail view, taken substantially as indicated by the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view, showing sepa.- rately a receptacular element such as may be formed of leather or the like and incorporated in a match box such as that illustrated in the preceding figures.
Fig. 7 is a view taken similarly to Fig. 6 but showing a metallic enclosing and attaching device or frame, within which a receptacular ele-ment, such as that shown in Fig. 6, may be secured.
Referring to the details of that specific embodiment of my invention chosen for purposes of illustration 11 being a package of cigarettes, or the like, a receptacular element 12 (a top opening thereof being shown as provided with side flapsl, 18', and a front flap 14 and a main cover flap 15) may be secured thereto by means comprising a. sheetmetal or similar frame 16 having a relatively movable bottom-engaging slide or lock 17.
,The frame 16, in that embodiment illustrated in Fig. 7, will be seen to comprise a back plate 18, an enclosing band 19, a bottom strip 20, a front plate 21, rearwardly projecting side plates 22, 22 and a rebent or dependent retaining linger 23. '.Unless for the purpose of utilizing bands or scraps of sheet metal, in preferenceto uniting the mentioned parts of the frame 16 by welding, the entire frame may be advantageously stamped from a slight-ly resilient sheet metal; and a striking surface may advantageously be provided, as suggested at 24, before or after or incidentally to stamping and/or bending operations suitrw able to the production of the frame 16 from a flat sheet.
Before attaching the frames 16 to receptacular elementsl, or the like, said frames may be advantageously buifed and/or attractively plated; and the reccptacular elements may be secured in place in any'suitable manner, as by means of rivets 25, extendmg through preformed or other openings 26 in the receptacular elements 12 and through registering openings 27, shown as provided in the frames 16.
In order to attach a. match box constructed in the describedananner to a cigarette package, it will be understood that the finger 23, preferably rather long and somewhat resilient, may be inserted through a top opening 28, in a cigarette package and gently forced downward, but slightly displacing the contained cigarettes, the side plates 22 being kept in engagement with the lateral surfaces of the cigarette package; and that the slidable or pivoted plate 17, or an equivalent lock or latch element, may then be shifted from a retracted position,y such as that indicated by the dotted line 17, Fig. 3 to a bottom-engaging position, such` that in which it is shown in itull lines in Figs. l and 3; and it may be held in the latter position (guided thereto by a rivet or rivets extending therethrough, or by rebent edges such as are suggested at 29, 29 or by other means) by means such as an engagement between a. rivet or boss 30 (provided in the bottom plate 20, or its equivalent) and one of a pair of intertitting openings Sl, 3l', adaiited to be alternatively engagd by said rivet or boss.
It will be obvious that attachable match boxes. oil' the general character described, may be sold either in conjnction with paci:- ages o t cigarettes or independently thereof and that, after they are suitably lilled with matches, the flaps l5, 123', la and/or i5, or as many such tlaps or equivalen i'. closure elements as may be preferred, may be normally held down by engagen'ient beneath `the band l5), or its equivalent. Thus the smoker ot cigarettes has merely to keep track of his cigarette package, the match bones being` always kept attached thereto, except as successive cigarette packages may be employed and replaced; but it should not he overlooked that the receptacular element 12 may itsel'l' be :termed oit sheet-metal andthat the band 19, whether attached thereto or to the trame 1G, may, it desired, be formed et elastic orA other flexible material., or entirely omitted.
'Although l have herein described a single complete embodiment or" my invention, it should be understood not only that various features ot' -'ny invention might be independ ently employed but also that numerous modi- .'[ications thereoic might be devised, by those skilled in the art to which this case relates, without the slightest departure from the spirit and scope of my invention, as the same is indicated above and in the following claims.
l claim as my invention:
l. ln an attaehable match box: a match receptacular element; a metallic traine' secured thereabout; and means l'or removably securing said frame to a iaekage of cigarettes comprising a back plate carrying an outwardly and downwardly dependent tinger and rearwardly bent side plates.
2. In an attachable match box: a match receptacular element; a metallic frame secured thereabout; and means for removably Lesaave lment, shilitable to a posit-ion beneath a ciga rette package.
3. In an attachable match box; a match rec` eptacular element; a metalilc frame secured thereabont; and means ior removably securing said 'lrame to a package ot cigarettey iid tra 'iecomprisi ng aback plate carryingan enci cling hand and a dependent linger, extending outwardly and drm'nwardly trom said. element supporting trame and side plates; and in which a bottom plate is integral with a liront plate and is provided with a locking element which is shiittable to and 'from a paclm-ge-engaging position.
4. in an zrttachable match box: a match. rec-eptacular element; a metallic trame secured therealfiout; and m ans tor removably securing said trame to a package of cigarettes, said trame comprising` back plate carrying an encircling band and a dependent linger extending outwardly and downwardly i'rom saidelement supporting trame and side plates; and in which a bottom plate is integral` with a front plate and is provided with a locking element which is shittable to and from a packageengaging position,- said front plate being provided with a striking surface.
5. ln an attachable mach box: a match receptacular element; a metallic frame secured thereaboutgand means tor removably securing said frame to a package ot' cigarettes, said trame comprising a. hack plate carrying an encircling band and a dependent linger extending outwardly and downwardly 'from said element supporting frame and side plates; and in which a bottom plate is integral with a front plate and is provided with a locking element which is shittable to and from a package-engaging position,- said trent plate being provided with a striking surface and said receptacular element being provided with a flap which is engageable beneath said band.
ln testimony whereof, l. have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 18th day of January, 1927.
