' UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMPLE-FASTENER FOR PACKAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,840, dated March 14, 1882.
Application filed June 20, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER R. PERRY, a' citizen of the United States of America, residing at New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sample-Fastenersfor Packages of Cutlery and other Articles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a cutlery-package with sample attached by means of the device which is the subject of my inven tion; Fig. 2, a similar view ofa package with two of my devices for retaining the sample upon the box, envelope, or card; Fig. 3, a' like view of a box or package for pens and similar small articles, and Fig. 4 a cross-section at the middle of Fig. 1.
The sameletter designates like parts in all the figures.
The object of my invention is to attach samplcs to boxes, packages, cards, boards, and other devices for putting up for sale cutlery, and other small wares and implements, in which one of the articles is fixed upon the outside to serve as a sample, which sample may be easily removed, inspected, and replaced, and be firmly retained withoutinj cry to the article. The usual method is to fasten the sample upon the box, package, or board with a cord or tape or by a band of rubber. The former are troublesome to take off and to replace, and are not heat unless put on by very skillful hands, and the rubber fastener or band is liable to rust or corrode the article, and, besides, soft elastic vulcanized rubher soon decays and becomes worthless as a fastening.
To remedy these objections and defects my invention consists in securing a sample to the box, package, card, or board used for putting up for sale the kind of articles hereinbefore for putting up mentioned-by means of acoiled metallic spring, the ends of which are attached to the box, its lid, or to some other part of the device used, .to secure all the articles which the sample represents.
This device has great advantages in ease of adjustment, neatness, and great saving of time in detaching and replacing the samples. The samples may be readily taken out, inspected, and cleaned as often as required. It does not decay itself or rust or tarnishthe samples.
In the drawings, Arepresents a box or package of small articles of hardware, cutlery, pens, jewelry, needles, and other small implements or tools, such as are put up in packages,,with a specimen or sample on the outside to be readily inspected.
b shows the sample, and c the retaining coiled spring for securing the sample to the box or package. The ends of the coiled spring a are provided with loops, eyes, or rings d 61, through which pass the fastening-strip h h to secure the ends of the springs to the box or package.
Thestrip may be made similar to an ordinary paper-fastener,'or two small staples may be used to secure the ends upon the top of the box. A single fastener may be made by passinga strip of metal on the under side of the box-lid up through the same and through the loops at the end of the spring, and thenturning its ends down flat upon the box, as shown in detail at h h, Fig. 4.
I do not limit myself to the exact mode of fastening the ends of the spring to the package, as this may be varied, the essential feature of the invention being the coiled spring suitably fastened to a box or package proper articles such as herein named, so that the spring will form a holder for the sample article and permit its ready removal and replacement. The spring I have represented as round; but it may be flat.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1-. In combination with a box or package, a sample-fastener comprising a coiled spring se* cured to said box or package, as explained, so
as to leave beneath the spring a space for the A,the coiled spring a, the loops or rings d, and reception of the sample, substantially as dethe fasteners h h, as set forth. scribed. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 2. The combination, in a device for attachpresence of two witnesses.
5 ing samples to packages, of the spring 0, the WALTER R. PERRY.
loops d, and the loop-fasteners h h, all as set Witnesses: forth. p Y J OHN J. LYON,
3. The combination of the box or package EDWARD S. NEILAN.
