PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST SAMUEL, OF ELBERFELD, GERMANY.
BOX-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,490, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed September 15,1902. Serial No. 123,555. (No model.)
To ail whom it may concern.-
Be it known that'LERNST SAMUEL, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Elberfeld,Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention comprises a new fastener for chests or boxes, especially for cigar-boxes, which essentially consists in the use of a blunt pike fastened to the lid of the chest or box in combination with a sheet-metal piece clasped over the upper edge of the front wall of the said box and perforated simultaneously with the said wall for receiving the said pike, which latter is retained within said perforation by friction only, thus closing the box in a simple and reliable manner.
For making my invention more clearly understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a box with my improvement having the lid opened. Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate the pike and the sheet-metal piece above referred to on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 shows the arrangement of parts when the lid of the box is closed.
In the construction of a box closing accord ing to my invention I use a blunt pike, as a, Fig. 1, which has its longer blunt end somewhat conically shaped and has a point at the other shorter end and a collar 7) for limiting the inward motion of the said pike when the pointed end thereof is driven into the lid 0 of the box cl, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. When thus driven into the lid, the projecting end of the point is bent down and riveted into the wood, whereby the collar is also drawn into the wood, and the pike is firmly secured to the lid. This being done, a U-shaped sheetmetal piece e, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4, is placed over the upper edge of the front wall of said casing, opposite to the said pike in the lid, and the catches f, formed at the ends of said piece, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, are pressed into the wood for securing the piece in position. Now the piece is pierced through for receiving the pike a and the wood of the front wall is likewise bored out for this purpose. Now it will be clear that the pike describes an are, as illustrated in Fig. 4 by dotted lines, when the lid is opened or closed. This motion is only possible by the spring action of the front wall, which latter yields to the pressure exerted thereupon by the depression of the pike into the hole, and by such action the pike is firmly held by friction when the lid is closed. Also it will be clear that the splintering of the wood is prevented by the piece c.
Having now particularly described my invention, I claim-- 1. In a fastener for boxes, the combination of a box, a lid linked thereto, a blunt conicallyshaped pike fastened to said lid,a sheet-metal piece clasped over the upper edge of the front wall of said box opposite to said pike and a pierced hole within said piece and front wall for receiving said pike when the lid is closed, substantially as described.
2. In a fastener for boxes the combination with a box and a lid linked thereto of a conically-shaped pike having its free end blunt and its other end pointed for being driven into said lid, a collar on said pike for limiting the inward motion thereof, a sheet-metal piece of U shaped form and having catches for being clasped over the front wall of said box opposite to said pike and a perforation within said piece and Wall for receiving said pike, substantially as described.
