JOSHUA VALTER IVINGET, OF HUNTINGTON, TEST VIRGINIA.
SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,885, dated December 20, 1898.
Application iiled January 25,1898. Serial No. 667,890. (No model.)
,T0 @ZZ whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA WALTER WIN- GET, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Huntington, in the county of Oab ell and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner-Fastenings for Desk-Pads, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the' same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a portion of a desk-pad with the corner down. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the corner raised. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the corner raised. Fig. et is a perspective view showing the two members of the fastening. ing a modified form. Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the mem bers of the fastening adapted to be secured directly to a desk. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a corner-piece having a modiled form of fastening, and Fig. S is a sectional view of the same with the corner-piece turned down. Fig. 9 is a perspective view showing a pad-board and pad fitted with the hinged clasp corners, one of said corners being shown in raised or open position.
This invention has relation to securing desk pads or blotters to a suitable pad board or base and is in the nature of a combined corner- Clasp and corner-covering, the object being to provide means of this character which will securely hold the pad and protect its corner portions, which will not form an obstruction to the arm or sleeve, and which presents a neat and attractive appearance.
vWith these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter C designates a pad-board, which is of the usual character.
A designates the pad-corners or corner-coverings, which are preferably of triangular form and which should be of metal or of some other suitable rigid material and which are Fig. 5 is a similar view showshown the member B of this connection ashaving a T-head portion Z9, while the member B is cut or slitted at c c', the portion thereof between the-slits forming a springtongue. The transverse portion of the T- head Z2 is inserted between this spring-tongue and the lateral portions of said member B, as shown. The member B is secured to a corner portion of the board C, while the member B is secured to the under side of the corner-piece A. It will be readily seen that when the corner-piece is turned on this hinge connection over and down upon the pad the tension of the spring-tongue will cause it to snap down into close or biting contact with the pad, so that its edge presents no obstruction to catch the hands or sleeve. I prefer to employ one of these hinged corner-clasps at each corner portion of the pad-board.
In Figs. 7 and 8 I have shown a dilferent form of hinge connection which may be employed, wherein one of the members consists of a lug or eye a, upon which the spring-ton gue of the other member bears and through which is passed a pin a', whose end portions are pivotally engaged by the lateral tongues of the spring member, as indicated at d". The invention, however, is not restricted to any particular construction of hinge connection, and various forms may be employed.
Instead of securing one member of such connections to a pad-board it may be secured directly to the top of a desk, which in that case forms the base or backing for the blotter-pad. By broadening such member, as shown in Fig. 5, the hinge connection may be made to clasp itself upon the pad-board by the tension of its spring without being fastened thereto. These corner-clasps, in addition t0 holding the blotter and protecting the corner portions thereof, also form convenient means for holding papers, dac., on the desk.
The outer edges of the corner-pieces A are bent or hanged downwardly, as indicated at A', to protect the edges of the pad at the corners and to avoid sharp projecting edges.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
IOO
l. The Combination with a. desk-pad board, of a, pad corner-piece hinged to each corner portion of the said board, substantially as specified.
2. The Combination With a desk-pad board, of pad-clasps and corner-pieces connected to the corner portions of said board, and oonsisting each of a. base member secured to ther said board, a. triangular corner-piece, and L hinged connection between said base member and corner-piece, substantially as specied.
