Description

M. MEYERSONJ CARD HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 26. 1917.
Patented Jan 25, 1921.
l/VVEA/TUR I ATTORNEY NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX MEYEBSON, OF NEW YORK N. Y. Y
CARD-HOLDER.
T 0 all) whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MAX MnYERsoN, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a ,card holder such as may be used upon packages, boxes, trunks, and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a holder which may be permanently fixed to the package and which is adapted to carry an address or like card, in such a manner that the card may be inserted and removed at will, and to provide the holder with means to positively retain the card against accidental displacement."
A further object, is to provide the body part of the holder with a well defined guideway along which the card may he slid into and out of operative position, and to provide a card retaining member connected with the body part adapted to move from a retaining position obstructing the guideway to a non-retaining position entirely free of the guide-way.
A further object is to provide means for latching the retaining member against accidental movement out of retaining position.
A further object is to so mount the retaining member that it will be frictionally yieldingly held in any position to which it may be moved. I
Other objects and aims of the invention,
moreor less specific than those referred to above,'will be in part obvious and in part pointed out .in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations,
arrangements or" parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and
v the scope of protection contemplated will be indicatedin the appended claims.
In the accompanying'drawings which are to be taken as a part of this specification,
and in which l have shown merely a preferred form ot embodiment of the inven- 1. tion. V
Figure l is a perspective view of a package illustrating the card holder of this invention as in use applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the card holder detached, illustrating a card retained therein. I
"fully closed.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 25 1921 Application filed October 26, 1917. Serial No. 198,584.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the manner in which the card retaming member is mounted and operated,
and Fig. dis a fragmentary perspective view illustrating a modified construction.
Referring to the drawings for describing in detail the structure which is illustrated therein, the reference character L indicates themain or body'portion of the card holder. This comprises upper and lower members land 2 andan end member 3, all connected together and preferably stamped from a "single sheet of suitable material such as and rigidly connected to the surface of the packagabbx or other article, as 6 (Fig.1) by means of rivets or other fastening means 7.
The card retaining member, as H, is
adapted to move into andout of position closing the open end of the guide-way, and, i
asan exemplary way of so mounting the retaining member, it is shown to be pivotally connected to the member 1 of the body. For this purpose its upper end is forced under the end portion of the memher 1 and is pivotally connected thereto as by a pivot member 8. The lower or free end of the retaining member may be squeezed into andbut of position beneath the adjacent end portion of the member 2 of the body.
Erictional engagement of the card retaining member with the under surfaces of the adjacent end portions of the members 1 and 2 may be sufficient to hold the card retaining member against accidental opening movement, but preferably a positively acting latch member, as 9, is employed. The latch member shown is made of a small piece of spring material.
It is connected with the card retaining member and is prov vided with a hear 0 arranged to enter an opening 11 formed in the. member 2 and to engage behind a shoulder 12 oil? said opening 11 when the card retaining member is Before the card retaining member can be swung open the head 10 may be pressed downwardly by the operators finger so as to disengage from the shoulder 12.
The retaining member is preferably fitted with an off-set portion 13 to correspond with the off-set portions 4 of the body part, the off-set portion 13 being intended to stand in position over the adjacent edge of the card after the card has been slid into the guide way 5 as clearly seen in Fig. 2.
The pivotal mounting of the card retaining member is such that when said'member is moved to the open position no part thereof obstructs free movement of the card into and out of the guide-way 5.
As suggested by the lettering appearing uponthe card in Fig. 2, this holder may be very advantageously used for retaining cards which may be reversed from time to time, that is, with.a card bearing a forwarding address on one side and a returning address on the other side, the same card may be used to carry the package to its first destination and then reversed to carry the package back to its original holder. Packages of articles to'be washed, for instance, may be sent to the laundry, and re turned to the owner, with the least possible confusion.
In the modification Fig. 5, a structure is illustrated which diflers fromothat of the previous figures only in that the off- set por tions 4 and 13 are formed by building up the parts of the device from pieces, or
'strips, laid one upon the other, the inner edges of the underlying strips as 14, in each case being inset with respect to the inner edges of the overlying strips 15 so as to form the guide-way 5. This arrangement also readily provides'recesses, as 16, beneath which the ends of the card retaining member are received.
The structure shown in Fig. 5, also has a certain advantage over the structure shown in the other figures, in that it enables the 'use of scrap strips of material,
' such as sheet fiber, and avoids necessity for the use of the expensive dies which would be necessary to shape up the parts as in the other figures. In a factory where boxes and cases are being manufactured, card holders constructed as in Fig. 5, may, therefore, be formed and attached to the cases at extremely small cost.-
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in theabove description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense. y I 7 Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A card holder adapted for attachment to the surface of an article for retaining a card aflixed to said article, said card holder comprising a body member and a retaining member to retain the card within the body member, the body member being substantially of U-shape in general contour and being of a cross section to provide relatively outer marginal portions adapted for attachment to the surface of the article and relatively inner marginal portions disposed to stand away from the underlying surface poi: tions of the article so as to provide a guideway between themselves and the article to receive marginal portions of the card. the
retaining member comprising a strip of ma terial having one of its ends pivotally connected to one leg of the U, the opposite end of said strip of material being adapted to swing into and out of position between the end portion of the other leg of the U and the underlying portion of the surface of the article, and a latch device cooperative between said last mentioned portions of the body member and the retaining member to hold the retaining member against accidental opening movement out of retaining position. j
2. A card holder comprisinga plurality of strips of sheet material, said strips being arranged upon the surface of an article for retaining a. card fixed to said surface of the article, the strips being connected with the article so that certain of said strips ofi greater width overlie others of said strips of lesser width thus providing portions of the first mentioned strips overhanging the second mentioned strips and spaced from said surface of the article, the disposition of the strips being such as thereby to provide a pocket within which a card may be retained fiat upon the. surface of said article,
, and a further strip having one of its ends pivotally engaged between an overhanging portion of one of the superposed strips and the underlying portion of the article and having its opposite end disposed to swing about said pivot into and out of position between an overhanging portion of another of said super-posed strips and the adjacent underlying portion of the article to thereby serve as a removable retaining member for the card.
3. A card holder comprising a plurality of strips of sheet material, saidstrips being arranged upon the surface of an article for retaining a card fixed to said surface of the article, said strips being connected with the article so that certain of said strips overlie others of said strips, portions of the first mentioned strips overhanging the second mentioned strips and spaced from said surface of the article, the disposition of the strips bein e such as thereby to provide a pocket formed partly by the surface of said article and partly by said strips within which pocket :1 card may be retained flat upon the surface of said article. and a further strip disposed to form a closure for said pocket.
4. A card holder comprising a plurality of stripsof sheet material, said strips being arranged upon the surface of an article for retaining a card fixed to said surface of the article, said strips being connected with the article so that certain of said strips of greater width overlie others of said strips of lesser width, thus providing portions of the first mentioned strips overhanging the sec- 0nd mentioned strips and spaced from said surface of the article, the disposition of the strips being su 11 as thereby to provide a pocket formed partly by the surface of said article and partly by said strips within which pocket a card may be retained flat upon the surface of said article, and a further strip disposed to form a closure for said pocket, together with means whereby to facilitate convenient removal of the card from the pocket.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
