STATES ATE POCKET-BOOK HOLDER.
Application filed June 7, 1910.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR IV. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Yakima, in the county of Yakima and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Book Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to devices adapted to be attached to a memorandum book whereby it may be engaged with the edge of the coat pocket so as to securely hold the memorandum book in the pocket.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved device of this character which can be readily detachably fastened to memorandum books of different lengths, and which will securely retain the memorandum book in a coat pocket.
The invention consists in a fastener for retaining a memorandum book in a coat pocket, said fastener being constructed as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a memorandum book with a fastener constructed in accordance with this invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a View in perspective of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. d is a view in perspective of a modification of the fastener.
In carrying out the invention, a narrow strip of metal 1 is provided, cut out from a sheet metal blank and formed with two overlapping flanges 2 which are bent over the strip 1, with their edges opposite each other to form a casing, said flanges 2 extending to one end of the strip 1 and terminating a short distance from its other end, which is bent over to form a hook 3. Projecting into and slidable within the flanges 2 is a narrow flat strip 4, having its outer end bent over to form ahook 5. Upon the back of the strip 1, adjacent to its hook end, is a pin or projection formed with a flat elongated portion 6, and longitudinal elongated portion 7 which is spaced apart from and parallel to the strip 1 by means of the angular portion 7. The pin is fastened to the strip 1 in any suitable Specification of Letters Patent.

manner, either by soldering the fiat portion 6 thereto or riveting it. The outer end of the pin is formed with a ball-shaped head 8 which serves to retain the fastener in engagement with a coat pocket when the pin is pushed down over the side of the coat pocket with the edge of the coat pocket resting against the angular portion 7 of the pin.
In Fig. 4 is shown a modification in which the pin or retaining arm is cut out of the strip 1 and bent up so as to have the pin parallel with and spaced apart from the strip 1. As shown in Fig. 4:, a strip 9 is cut out of the strip 1 and bent up at 10 to bring the strip 9 parallel with the strip 1, the outer end of the strip 9 being curled over to form the head 11.
The fastener is attached to a memorandum book 12 by adjusting the parts 1 and 4 so as to bring the hooks 3 and 5 in engagement with the edges at the ends of one of the covers of the memorandum book, as shown in Fig. 1. The book is then inserted in the coat pocket bringing the retaining pin on the back of the strip 1 in engagement with the coat pocket, the pin extending downward outside of the flap of the pocket with the upper edge of the pocket resting against the angular portion of the pin. The head at the end of the pin serves to clasp the fastener tightly to the pocket.
In order to hold the strips 1 and 4: from slipping out of their adjusted position, suitable means are provided for holding them in such position, and as here shown, preferably by slightly bending the strip 4: as at 4, whereby as the strip 4 is pushed into the flanges 2, it will bind upon the strip 1.
It will be seen that by means of this invention a simple, cheap and efficient fastener is provided which may be readily attached to and detached from any sized memorandum book, and which will securely hold said book in a coat pocket, and thereby prevent its being removed from the pocket, except as occasion demands, or of slipping out of the same.
Having described the invention, I claim:
In a device of the character described, a strip of metal having longitudinal flanges bent over the same toward each other, and
having a projecting end With a hook, at strip of metal having a hook at its outer end, and being slightly bent adjacent thereto, said strip being slidable Within said flanges, and means projecting from said flanged strip for engaging the fastener With the edge of a pocket.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ARTHUR WILLIAM CAMPBELL.
