Description
Dec. 9, 1930. E. F. KAISER 1,784,237
HOLDER Filed April 8, 1929 gwuemtoz Patented Dec. 9, 1930 PATENT OFFICE ERNEST F. KAISER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HOLDER Application filed April 8,
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: T 0 provide meansfor maintaining a book in spread or open position; tofurnish a device for accomplishing the said purpose, and to further furnish a letter opener or blade connected therewith; and to provide an attractive device capable of bearing an inscription conspionously.
Drawings Description As seen in the drawings, the holder comprises a cross head 8 and an extension blade 9. The blade 9 is preferably disposed in perpendicular relation to the cross head 8 and is provided with a tapered cutting section 10, at the free extremity thereof.
This blade serves two purposes, one being to steady the service position of the cross bar 8, resting as it does in service and as shown 0 in Figure 1 of the drawings at the hinge of the book; the other purpose is to provide means for cutting the leaves of a book, or opening letters. 7
The cross bar 8 has at the extremities thereof overturned clip portions 11. The clip portions 11 are preferably pointed as seen best in Figure 2 of the drawings to efiect easy in sertion between the leaves of a book when disposed in open position as shown in Figure 1.
The body of the clip portions 11 are preferably spaced from the bar 8 as seen in Figure 3 of the drawings to provide pockets 12 adapted to hold a number of sheets of the book thereby steadying the grip of the device on the leaves ofthe book and steadying the service position of the device itself.
The cross bar 8 serves an ideal purpose for inscription of the name of the owner and the temporary or present reader of the book.
1929. Serial No. 353,405.
As shown in the drawings, the preferred construction provides for a unitary integral metal member incorporating all of the features above mentioned. It will be understood, however, that if it is so desired, the bar 8 may be riveted or otherwise permanently secured to the blade 9. Other features of constructive change maybe devised without passing out of the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
Claims:
1. A holder as characterized comprising a cross head and a blade, said cross head and blade being disposed in perpendicular relation each to the other, and means disposed adjacent the terminals of the cross head offset from the plane thereof for engaging in grouped relation, the leaves of a book, and means provided on said blade for cutting objects such as envelopes or other paper articles.
2. A holder as vcharacterized comprising a cross-head and a blade, said cross-head and blade being disposed in perpendicular relation each to the other, and means disposed adjacent the terminals of the cross-head offset from the plane thereof for engaging in grouped relation, the leaves of a book, and means provided on said blade for cutting ob jects such as envelopes or other paper articles, said means embodying a pointed sharpened terminal for said blade.
3. A holder as characterized comprising a cross head and blade, said cross head and blade being disposed in perpendicular relation each to the other, and having relatively narrow clips spaced widely apart at the opposite ends of the cross head so as to be applicable to opposite leaves of an open book.
4. A holderas characterized comprising a cross head and blade, said cross head and blade being disposed in perpendicular relation each to the other, and having relatively narrow clips spacedwidely apart at the 0pposite ends of the cross head so as to be applicable to opposite leaves of an open book, said clips being integral with the cross head and having end portions ofiset from and returned parallel to the plane of the cross head.
