S. S. THOMAS.
1300K HOLDER.
No. 316,499. Patented Apr. 28, 1885-.
, l l/VVE/VTOR M L bm ATTORNEY NITED STATES SIMON SMITH THOMAS, OF DAVISBOROUGH, GEORGIA.
BOOK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,499, dated April 28. 1885.
Application filed June 5, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIMON S. THOMAS, of Davisborough, in the county of Jefferson and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in book-holders, the object of the same being to provide a book-holder by means of which books, pamphlets, and otherlike objects may be kept open, and one which may be quickly applicable'to books of great thickness as well as to books of lesser thickness. A further ob ject is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations ofparts,as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
.In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view. of my invention. Fig.2 is aview thereof showing the holder attached to a book. 1 A represents an irregular-shaped spring of leaf metal, the upper end of which is curved in the form of ahook, and to the curved end of which is securedin any desired manner the flat metal piece B, rn nning at right angles thereto, and adapted to be placed against the leaves of a book and hold the same in an open position.
The parts A and B may each be made of a single piece of spring metal, or, if desired, the same may be made of leaf metal and joined together by means of rivets or in any other desired manner.
The device may be made of brass or nickel for the purpose of ornamentation, or, if desired, it can be made of cheaper metal and be covered with leather, chamois-skin, or indiarubber.
For the purpose of affording a hold for the same, and to prevent wear from constant handling, I provide the ornamental plate O, preferably constructed as shown, and secure the same to the hook end of the spring A and to the center of the strip B.
When it is desired to secure my device to a book not having many pages, the free end D of the spring Ais pushed under the back, and the metal piece 13 over the leaves.
Then it is desired to attach my device to a book or pamphlet having a great many pages, and consequently of large size, the same is accomplished by placing the free end D of the spring A between the leaves and the metal piece B over the leaves thereof.
For the purpose of providing convenient means whereby a book of great width can be kept open and the width of the leaves covered, I provide the adjustable arms E, which are provided on one end with the collar or sleeve 13, which is adapted to he slipped over the ends of the band B when desired.
Having fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. In a book-holder, the combination, with a flat piece of spring metal slightly curved near one end and curved to a hook shape at its opposite end, of a flat curved piece of spring metal secured to the hook-shaped end of the first-named piece and at right angles thereto, and provided with longitudinally-extensible arms, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a bookholder consisting, essentially,of a spring-metal strip bent as shown, and provided with a hook-shaped end, and the fiat spring-metal strips or arms rigidly secured at right angles.
to the hook-shaped end of the strip A, the outer or free ends of said strips or arms being turned upwardly, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SIMON SMITH THOMAS.
Witnesses:
W. B. FRANCIS, A. G. MrrcHELL.
