UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BOOK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1906.
. Application filed December 31, 1904. Serial No. 239,277.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILDRED H. P. CAT- LIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book-Hold ers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in book-holders, the object being to provide a simple device for holding and carrying small books or pamphlets; and it consists in a flexible cover in combination with a fastening for retaining the same closed and a slip-handle for convenience in carrying.
It further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 is a section, and Fig. 3 illustrates a slightly-modified form.
A represents the holder, which preferably is flexible, made of leather or similar material, suitably lined, if desired, folded in the center and provided with pockets 1 1 at the edges adapted to receive books, pamphlets, and the like B B, and attached to one of these pockets may be the pocket-book 2. A strap 3 is adapted to surround the holder, as shown in the drawings, and may be stitched thereto, as shown at 4, to attach it permanently or removably held in place by the fastener 5, as shown in the modified form illustrated in Fig. 3. The ends of the strap are preferably provided with the spring snapfasteners 6 7 of the type usually used on gloves and'the like. A slip-handle 8 is provided with loops 9 9 at the end by means of which it has sliding connection with the strap. This slip-handle is capable of being pulled out for use as a convenient means by which to suspend the holder from the hand or wrist, and when not desired for that purpose it is adapted to be slid together around the holder out of the way, as shown in the sectional view. In this way a very simple device is afforded for carrying all sorts of small books or pamphlets, periodicals, or the like, and it is obvious that its application might be extended to music-rolls, for instance, or other purposes of like character. Its appearance is neat and attractive, as it may be manufactured in different sizes, shapes, and designs and of such material as may suit the taste or requirements of trade.
In using my improved book-holder it is the intention to insert the books or pamphlets B B in the pockets 1 1, after which the book holder is closed, the snap fastened, and the handle 8 drawn out, as shown in the drawings, thereby to suspend the article over the hand or wrist.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A book-holder composed of flexible material folded in the center to form two sections and provided with pockets adapted to receive books or pamphlets removably therein, means for fastening the sections of the holder together, said means comprising a strap which extends around the holder, and a sliding handle rovided with loops at its ends by means of which it has sliding connection with the fastening-strap.
2. The combination with a book-holder folded through the center, a strap secured to the folded edge of the holder and adapted to be fastened together at its ends around the holder and a handle having sliding connection with the strap, on each side of the fastened point.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MILDRED H. P. CATLIN.
