PAPER-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Application filed December 30, 1915. Serial No. 69,348.
This invention relates to certain improve.
ments in paper clips.
The primary object of the invention is to produce a paper clip of simple and inexpen- I sive construction, which shall be relatively permanent in its nature due to features of construction hereinafter set forth and which shall be adapted preferably to embody as a portion of the unitary structure advertising matter or a disk displaying, perhaps, artistic or advertising designs.
Other advantages and uses will appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of the clip in use.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3-3, Fig. 2.
The invention comprises a disk 1- having its body portion slit or cut to form, preferably as shown, an elongated spring tongue -2. The tongue may, however, be of various shapes as desired or as may seem most efiicient in adapting the device to specific uses.
The tongue at the point where it joins the body of the disk 1 is'formed in accordance with this invention with a substantially semi-cylindrical raised or stamped-up portion 3 of such a character that when the tongue is raised by its free end portion, the tongue throughout its length is spaced from the body of the disk or lies in a plane at the rear of the disk, allowing theinsertion of the papers or other materials received by the clip, up to the point of contact with the base of the cylindrical portion 3 at the region of its attachment to the disk, and by reason of the inclined or inwardly curved portion 4- of the tongue, the pressure or clamping action takes place at a point removed from the inserted edge of the papers.
Preferably the end 5- of the tongue 2 is bent outwardly to allow the free insertion of papers, etc, and to form a gripping handle.
The hinging portions of the disk and tongue are reinforced by an outwardly stamped portion or bead 6 extending longitudinally of the tongue and circumferentially of the cylindrical hinging portion 3' and concentric with said hinging portion 3, but of longer radius, and preferably the bead is itself curved in cross section and of slightly greater length than the arc of the cylindrical portion 3. The raised or semi-cylindrical hinging portion 3- and the circumferentially extending semi-cylindrical bead 6- render the device relatively permanent and efficient under ordinary conditions of use.
The disk 1 is adapted to receive and have its edge, at 7, clamped or flanged. around a plate 8 of any suitable material, such as perhaps cardboard, covering the tongue 2- and the main body of the disk and adapted to carry advertising or design matter, as the case may be.
As an advertising means the device is very desirable, as the advertising matter is always before the person using the clip, this being the only portion of the clip normally exposed to view.
Although I have shown and described one particular construction, arrangement and combination of elements as perhaps embodying the preferable species of the invention, 1 do not desire to limit myself to the same as many changes may be made in the details of construction, arrangement and even in the combination, by way of the omission of an element, without departing from the spirit of this invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A paper clip comprising a disk, a tongue integral with the disk along one edge only, said tongue provided with a semi-cylindrical portion adjacent its connection to the disk and a laterally and longitudinally curved bead formed upon the circumference of the semi-cylindrical portion and merging into the disk and into the tongue adjacent the termination of the semi-cylindrical pornally of the tongue and merging into the tion. disk and tongue respectively.
2. A clip comprising a disk, a tongue ex- Inwitne'ssi whereof I have hereunto set tending across the (118k and. integral with my hand this 23rd da of December, 1915..
5 the disk along one edge only, said tongue RICHA D J. SMEETON.
