- This invention relates in general to paper holding devices and in particular to a device which is adapted to temporarily hold papers of any kind. When used out-of-doors it may be secured in a convenient place to receive and hold newspapers and magazines, as well as letters and circulars. This invention relates in general to paper holding devices and in particular to a device which is adapted to temporarily hold papers of any kind. When used out-of-doors it may be secured in a convenient place to receive and hold newspapers and magazines, as well as letters and circulars. It may also be made smaller in size to use indoors for holding single sheets of paper, such as insurance policies, bills, memoranda, or other papers which it is desired to keep in view for ready reference or as a reminder.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a permanently fixed one-piece device for temporarily holding newspapers, mail matter, and the like in a manner which will permit the ready and quick placement into the device of such papers by the use of only one hand and without having to touch or move any part of the device.
Another object is to provide a device of this nature of unitary structure with no moving parts.
A further object is to provide a device which will securely hold all kinds of papers, magazines, or mail matter without tearing or mutilating them and which will permit easy and quick removal thereof from the device.
Furthermore, my device is of such nature that a resilient wedge-shaped space is provided for receiving and securely holding papers and the like.
The above objects and advantages have been accomplished by the device as shown in the accompanying drawings, of which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing my device attached to a supporting surface;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a similar view of a modified form of the invention; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view of another modification of my invention.
My device may be made from sheet material bent in the form shown in the drawings or from east or molded materials of metal or of plastic or the like.
The device comprises a holding member ID which is provided at its lower end with a tab II whereby it is secured at the end to the supporting surface I2. This surface, when the device is used out-of-doors, may consist preferably of a door or a door casing. The body member is inclined upwardly in relation thereto so as to provide a tapered or wedge-shaped gripping space I 3 varying in width from the place where the holding member joins the tab I I, where it is at minimum width, to the upper end of the holding member where the space is at maximum width. The width of the space at this point is such as to accommodate the largest piece of mail matter or newspaper which it is desired to place within the device. The space at the lower end of the holding member tapers oif to nothing so the single sheets of paper may be securely held therein.
The upper end of the holding member I0 is held in fixed spaced relation to the supporting surface I2 by means of a spacing member I4. This member is formed integrally with the resilient holding member Ill and it is extended inwardly preferably at right angles to the holding member. The spacing member is formed at its inner end with an upwardly extending tab I 5, whereby the inner end of the member may be securely fastened to the supporting surface. Suitable fastening screws I6 are passed through the tabs and into the material of the supporting surface.
The material from which the device is made is preferably flexible so as to assure the resilient holding of the papers placed within the device. However, it has been found that the wedge-shaped or tapered opening formed between the body member and the supporting surface is suflicient to firmly and securely hold the papers in place.
In the device shown in Fig. 3 the holding member I1 is slightly curved inwardly so as to decrease the taper of the opening I3 at the lower end of the device. In order to adapt my device for use in cases where there is no suitable or continuous supporting surface to coact with the inclined holding member to provide the gripping space I3, I provide a backing member 20, as shown in themodification of Fig. 4. The wedgeshaped gripping space I3 in this form of the invention is therefore provided between the body member Ill and the backing member 20. In this form of the device, the fastening screws I6 are passed through the tabs II and I5, the backing member 20 and into the material of the supporting surfaces 2|.
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that when my device is secured in place to a suitable supporting surface, which is preferably smooth and straight, it is only necessary when papers are to be held thereby to slip them within the gripping space I3 and to force them downwardly into this space to the position where the width of the space is substantially the same as the thickness of the papers themselves, whereupon slight further downward movement will cause the paper to be firmly gripped between the holding member and the supporting surface. The spacing member I4, being arranged at an angle to the holding member, will permit the latter to be flexed when receiving paper articles.
When it is desired to remove the papers from the device, it is only necessary to grasp them with one hand and to move them upwardly into a wider portion of the gripping space whereupon they will be readily released without mutilation or tearing.
What I claim is:
The combination with a substantially flat vertically arranged supporting surface, of a onepiece receiving and holding clip permanently attached at opposite ends to said surface, comprising a relatively narrow holding member bowed inwardly toward said surface and having its lower end formed with a tab for attachment to said surface, said holding member flexing toward and away from said surface to accommodate paper articles of various sizes, and a resilient spacing member formed integrally with said holding member at the upper end thereof, said spacing member extending inwardly toward said surface and being arranged at an angle to said holding member to thereby permit said holding member to be flexed when receiving a newspaper, where- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
