PAPER-HOLDER.

Beit known that I, JEROME S. BASOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, county of Newcastle, and State of Delaware, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in paper-holders, and has for its object to provide an effective paper-holder which may be applied to the outside of the house-door,in which a newspaper may be held until removed therefrom by the occupant of the house.

With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may underderstand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a doorway, showing my invention applied thereto; and Fig. 2, a vertical section through a door, showing my holder in side elevation.

In the drawings, A represents the holder, which is designed to be formed of one piece of spring-wire, and this wire is bent or coiled at the lower end so as to form the two eyelets B, through which screws 0 are adapted to pass to secure the holder to the door. Thewire then in passing upward from the eyelets is bent so as to form the loop D, extending outward from the door, and this loop is for the purpose of giving to the holder a better spring action. The wire in passing upward from the loop D passes in a straight line and is adapted to lie in close contact with the door, as illustrated at E. The upper end of the wire is coiled, preferably, in the form of a circle, as shown at F, which is for the purpose of giving a broad surface for retaining the paper in between the holder and the door. The end of the wire is coiled back upon itself and may be soldered together or secured in .any other manner. Of course the portion F may be made square, rectangular, oblique, or in any other manner, but would preferably be made in the form of a circle.

G is a loop formed in the wire extending outward from the same and is located in a straight portion E in the upper part of the same near the portion F. This loop G is for the purpose of furnishing a thumb-hold for withdrawing the holder from contact with the door. The portion F is formed so that it will curve or slant away from the door at its upper end. This is for the purpose of allowing a newspaper to be easily slipped behind the same, and thus a newspaper can be slipped behind the holder or removed therefrom without touching the holder; but in some cases when the newspaper is exceptionally bulky it may be necessary to pull the holder a slight distance away from the door, in which case the thumb-hold Or would be utilized.

The opening within the portion F may be utilized, if desired, for advertising purposes by closing said opening with a sheet of tin, cardboard, or the like with the advertisement printed thereon. This would not interfere in any manner with the working of the same.

The advantage of my invention is that my holder may beattached to any door and can be manufactured so cheaply that it can be given by the newspaper dealers to their customers, and by inserting the newspaper in the holder the newspaper is not liable to be blown about, as is often the case when it is merely placed upon the doorstep, and is not liable to become damaged by the minor a damp doorstep; and another advantage is that upon opening the door the paper is really carried within the house, and the occupant or the house therefore does not have to'step upon the porch or step to obtain the paper.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown,as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is As an improved article of manufacture, a paper-holder formed of a single piece of wire, one end of the same being bent so as to form the two eylets B at the lower end, the wire then extending upward and being bent so as to form the circle F at the upper end, the wire between the circle and the eyelets adapted to normally lie against the surface to which it is secured, said wire being bent outward and then back justbelow the circular portion to form a thumb-hold, said wire also bent outward and then back just above. the eyelets to form a spring portion, the circular portion being slightly curved outward so that the up per end will normally lie at a distance from the surface to which the holder is secured, 10 substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
