Description

J. E. CUNIN.
GLAMPING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED DEO.18, 1909.
Patented July 15, 1913.
ITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
JOSEPH E. CUNIN, 0F ALLIANCE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE MGCASKEY REGISTER COMPANY, 015 ALLIANCE, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CLAMIING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. CUNIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Clamping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a spring operated clip adapted to secure articles and particularly a slip or slips of paper to the face of a plate or leaf.
The invention consists in producing a spring operated clip provided with means for maintaining it in proper position upon a plate from a single piece of wire whereby a minimum amount of wire is used in its construction and its formation into a clip facilitated.
For the purpose of illustration I have, in the accompanying drawings, shown and herein described. one form of clip or clamping device embodying my invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a clip, embodying my invention, applied to one face of a leaf or plate. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clip detached from the leaf or plate. Fig. 5 is a view of a section of wire partially formed into a clip.
In the drawings, A indicates a portion of a plate or leaf against which articles such as a slip or slips of paper are pressed and held.
The leaf or plate A may be of any desired size and carry one or more clips. The leaf is provided with two spaced openings a, b for each clip, the purpose of which will be hereinafter set forth.
1 indicates as a whole a clip formed from a single piece of wire and comprising a coil 2, and a clip arm 3 and a clip supporting arm 4, leading from the opposite ends or end convolutions of the coil 2. The arm 3 is bent at substantially right angles at a point somewhat remote from the face of the leaf, as shown at 3% and extends upwardly, the free end of the arm 3 being curled to form an enlarged portion to engage the paper slips. By this construction it will be seen that the upper portion of the coil acts as a support for the lower edges of the paper slips.
The arm 4: extends laterally from the coil Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 18, 1909.
Patented J uly 15, 1913. Serial. No. 533,949.
2 and is doubled on itself to form a leaf engaging lug 4 which projects through the opening a of the plate A. The arm is then bent, as shown at l", to form a bar 4 which extends longitudinally through the coil 2 and keeps the latter in proper position and close against the leaf during the operation of the arm 3. The free end of the bar l is slightly curved as shown at 4: and extends through the opening I) to engage with the opposite face of leaf A.
The lug 4-" is preferably bent upwardly and engages with the adjacent face of the leaf which serves as an abutment whereby the coil can operate as a tension spring for the clip arm 3.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the arm 3 operates as a clip for removably maintaining slips of paper against the leaf or plate A, while the arm loperates to secure the coil 2 and arm 3 upon the said plate, and also to maintain the coil in close engagement therewith.
To those skilled in the art of making apparatus of the class described, many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, My disclosures and the description therein are purely illustrative, and are not intended. to be in any sense limiting.
What I claim is:
1. In a filing appliance, the combination of a leaf formed with two spaced openings, and a clip device comprising a coil arranged between and substantially in line with the said openings and having arms extending from its opposite ends, one of said arms operating as a clip and the other arm being doubled. on itself to form a lug and a bar, the said lug being arranged at right angles to the bar and extending through one of said openings in the leaf and the free end of the bar extending in front of the clip arm and through the other opening to secure the said device in position.
2. A leaf having two openings therein, and a clip formed of a single piece of wire, said wire having sections each extending through one of said openings and making engagement with one surface of said leaf, there being a coil formed of said wire on the opposite surface of said leaf between said openings and held against said leaf by a section of said Wire passing through the coil, and a slip engaging member connected with said coil and yieldingly pressed thereby toward said leaf.
3. A clip device formed from a single piece of Wire and comprising a coil having extensions leading from its opposite ends. one Of said extensions operating as a clip arm and the other ofsaid extensions being doubled on itself to form a laterally progectmg lug, and also bent to form a bar extending at right angles to said lug and through said coil, the said lugand free end of the bar being adapted for engagement With a suitable support.
in testimony whereof I afiiX my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
