WIRE PAnn-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907'.
Application filed October l0, 1906. Serial No. 338,253.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER L. CURTIS, of Worcester, in' the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Paper-Clips; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to paper fasteners and particularly to spring clips, designed to be utilized as bindings for a number of sheets of paper.
An object of this invention is to provide a novel clip formed of spring metal of such rigidity as to cause the jaws of the clip to remain in contact with the paper inserted between them, the action of the said spring jaws being augmented by the novel arrangement of the terminals of the ends of the wire forming the clip whereby the spring action of the said ends is communicated to the jaws.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel spring clip with integral extensions forming the jaw operating means whereby pressure thereon separates the jaws and permits the insertion of the material to be clamped the said section of the clip being in contact and the contacting por-v tions forming fulcrums on which the clamping jaws oscillate.
A further object of this invention is to provide a spring clip, the jaws of which may be distended to accommodate papers of dierent thickness, said jaws lying parallel to contact with the papers in such a way as to afford unusual frictional action.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure l, is a view in perspective illustrating the clip, with a fragment of paper applied thereto. Fig. 2, is an 'edge view thereof.
In the drawings A and B denote the two jaws of the clip and C, D, the jaw operating extensions which are formed integral with the jaws, the whole clip being made of spring metal, preferably wire.
In producing the clip, the material forming the said clip is coiled `on itself to form a central loop E, the ends of the said material are then extended in opposite directions to form the jaws A and B and the extensions C, D. The extensions are separated when in their normal position but are pressed into contact to separate the jaws as shown in Fig. 2, when the material is inserted between the jaws. After the portions of the material are bent to parallel each other, the extremities F, G, are made to converge slightly and lie across the sides of the looped portion E, the said extremities bearing thereon to exert pressure to augment the action of the spring material in retaining the jaws together. The fulcrum on which the jaws oscillate is at the point H, or approximately so and the pressure of the extremities is at a point slightly below the fulcrum, thus the said extremities tend to hold the jaws in contact as heretofore explained.
In utilizing this invention, the extensions are pressed together and owing to the fulcrums heretofore indicated, the jaws are forced apart to accommodate the sheets of paper, price cards, signs or like material and as soon as the extensions are released, the jaws will spring toward each other until the inserted material is clamped and it will be found that the jaws can so adjust themselves as to lie approximately parallel with the surface of the material clamped and hence the said clamping action is produced throughout the area of the jaws. It is on account of this adjustable feature of the jaws that unusual frictional engagement is attained.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A paper fastener comprising a clip having a central coil, and adjacent jaws having extensions, the said extensions being separated whereby pressure on the said extensions opens the jaws.
2. A paper fastener comprising a clip consisting of a strip of metal coiled to form two jaws, and adjacent extensions beyond `the jaws having extremities overlying and pressing on the coiled portion.
3. A paper fastener comprising a clip formed of a strip of metal coiled to form jaws, with adjacent extensions overlapping beyond the coiled portion, and extremities overlying the coiled portion and exerting pressure thereon below the pivotal points.
4. A paper fastener comprising a spring clip consisting of a strip of metal coiled centrally to form jaws the said strip being then bent in opposite directions to overlap beyond the coil, and inwardly bent extremities 5 overlying the coiled portion and exerting pressure thereon.
v5. In a spring clip, a strip of metal coiled to form jaws, and extensions forming means for manipulating the jaws, the said extensions having extremities which are bent to 10 overlie and exert pressure on opposite sides of the coiled portion, substantially as described. i
