CLIP OR FASTENEFR.v
sBEc'IFTcATIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,150, dated octobe 2r, 19de.
Application filed June 24, 1903l To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BEDwoRTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Clips or Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like'parts.
This invention has for its object the production of an improved clip or fastener for securing together in a firm and convenient manner sheets of paper or other material, the construction of the clipor fastener being such that it can be readily applied and will remain securely in position thereafter. Y
The clip or fastener embodying my invention can be readily made at a low cost and possesses certain valuable and desirable features to be fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
Figure l is a face View of a clip or fastener. embodying my invention. Fig. 2`is a back view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a face view of the clip in use.
The clip is formed by a single piece of wire of suitable diameter and possessing such re" silience that the divergent legs at the back of the body portion will normally bear upon thev latter and at four separate points, thus providing for a firm and well-distributed grasp upon the sheet material interposed between the legs andbody portion. Referring to the drawings, the body portion is shown as having the shape substantially of a fivepointed Star and comprising the loop-like bends or arms a, a', a2, a3, and a4,'radiating from the center and substantially symmetrically disposed with relation to each other. Of said arms, a and a2 are oppositely extended, and arm a depends centrally between them, the nearersides ofthe two adjacentarrns a3 and a4, respectively, being shorter than the o uter sides and bent at 30 and 40. From the bend 30 the wire. is extended to form a leg 31, while the other end of the wire is eX- tended from the bend 40 to form a second leg, 4:1, the legs diverging and extending across the back of the body portion of the clip. Said legs cross the'sidesof the arms a and a2 Serial No. 162,878. (No model.)
at 1 and 2, respectively, and normally bear or press tightly against the same, forming two holding or contact points, and the legs also cross and bear upon the rentrant bends 10 and 20, forming two more contact or hold ing points thereat. The bend l0 is between the arms ct and `@Sand bend 2O between arms a2 and a4of the body portion, as will be manifest from an inspection of the drawings. The
extremities of the legs project beyond the interposed material is tightly grasped at the four points l 2 and 10 20, the legs by the inherent resilience thereof pressing toward the body portion of the clip at such points. Thus by providing four well-separated holding or contact points the sheet material is firmly and securelyfheld together, and the clip will be maintained in 'proper position thereon without slipping or getting loose. Should a pile of sheets of considerable thickness be used, the saine are accommodated by the armsct3 a4, and the legs are pushed farther away from the back of the body portion of the clip to accommodate the increased thickness of the interposed material.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
1. A wire clip or fastener comprising a body portion shaped to present five radiating and substantially symmetrically disposed arms, the nearer sides of two adjacent arms being bent to form two divergent legs extended across the backof the body portion and crossing two opposite arms thereof, the legs cooperatingwith the body portion to provide four holding or contact points.
2. A. wire clip or fastener comprising a body portion shaped to present substantially a fivearmed star, the nearer sides of two adjacent t ICO arms thereof being bent to form two divergent In testimony whereof I have signed my legs extended across the back of the body name to this specification in the presence of portion and crossing two opposite arms theretwo subsoribin g witnesses.
of, said extensions cooperating with the body JOHN A. BEDWORTII. portion to provide four holding or Contact Witnesses:
points, the extremities of the legs projecting JOHN C. EDWARDS,
beyond the fifth arm located between them. EMILY C. HQDGES.
