MOP OR BROOM HOLDER.

SFECIFICATION forming part-of Letters Patent No. 586,238, dated July 13, 1897.

Be it known that I, HUBERT KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, (Gcrmantown,) in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop or Broom Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to a suspended holder for mops or brooms, and in such connection it relates particularly to the construction and arrangement thereof.

The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple, durable, and effective suspended mop or broom holder second, to provide a flanged oblong box-shape mop or broom holder with a series of two-part clamps, whereof one of each is rigid and the other movable and preferably spring-controlled to bind against the handle or rod of the suspended mop or broom, and, third, to provide an oblong box-shape suspending device with perforated rims on two sides thereof and with rigid and movable clamp-holders, the movable members of said holders limited as to their range of movement by means of backstops and springs, whereby the mop or broom suspended from the stick or handle thereof can be maintained, yet at the same time each of the mops or brooms readily released from a holder thereof.

My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a mop or broom holder when constructed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.

The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a mop or broom holder embodying the main features of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, showing a broom and a mop in application thereto.

Referring to the drawings, A represents an oblong box-shape device adapted to be suspended from the ceiling or other elevated structure, perforated in the top a to permit of the insertion of a screw or other fastening means therethrough. The mop or broom holder hereinbefore described is operated as follows: A broom or mop is inserted through one of the openings in the rim a or a on one side or the other of the box-shape device A, so as to be brought into contact with one of the fixed clasps or holders 1? and with a flap or strip 19 under the tension of a spring 12 which in the inserting of the handle of the mop or broom is slightly raised under the tension of the spring 19 but when the handle has been inserted between the fixed and movable clamping mem-, bers of the holder and the hand is released from the handle of the broom or mop, the flap, by means of the spring, will press the handle into close contact with the fixed member of the clasp or holder and hold the broom or mop suspended from the device A, as clearly and fully illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A mop or broom holder, comprisingaboxshaped device having side flanges or rims perforated to receive the handles of mops or brooms, a series of clamps each provided with a fixed semicircular member secured to the side of the device above each perforation in the rims, a movable spring-pressed member adjacent to said'fixed member and a stop-pin adapted to limit the movement in one direction of each movable member, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. A mop or broom holder, comprisingan inverted-boX-shaped device, the lower edge of which is flanged at right angles to the sides of the box, a series of perforations formed in said flanges to permit of the passage of a broom or mop handle through each of said flanges, a series of semicircular holders rigidly secured to the sides of the box and in alinement with said perforations, a series of narrow strips pivoted at one end to the sides of the box, the free end of each strip being adapted to confine a handle within a semicircular holder, a spring adapted to press said strip downward toward the holder, and a'stop-pin adapted to limit the downward movement of said strip, substantially as and for the purposes described.
