Be it known that I, MYRON H. COLONEY, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Violin Chin-Rest, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved violin chin-rest which is simple and durable in construction, readily placed in position on the instrument or removed therefrom whenever desired, and constructed to fit instruments of different sizes.

The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same,as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same as applied. Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation of the improvement, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.

is formed with a tubular shank part B, on which slides a tubular shank part 0, formed at its lower end with a foot 0, located directly opposite the head B. On the under side of the head B is secured a strip of rubber D, preferably roughened and made wedge-shaped,

and a similar piece of rubber D is secured on the top of the foot 0, the said rubber pieces being adapted to engage the top and bottom of the body of the instrument E, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 2. Now as the contacting and roughened surfaces of the rubber pieces D and D are inclined they readily hold 011 the top and bottom parts of the instrument to securely fasten the rest in place. From the foot 0 extends upwardly a post F, made polygonal in section and fitted to slide in a correspondingly=shaped aperture formed in the bottom B closing the lower shank part B, as indicated in Fig. 2.

On the post F within the hollow shank part B is coiled a spring G, resting with its lower end on the bottom B and with its upper end on a screw or pin H, fastened to the upper end. of the post F and projecting into a vertically-disposed slot B formed in the shank part B.

Now it will be seen that by the arrangement described the shank parts B and O are fitted to slide one on the other to permit of drawing the head B and foot G such distance apart as to permit of conveniently placing the rubber pieces D and D onto the top and bottom of the body of the instrument.

On drawing the head B and foot 0 apart the spring G is compressed, and as soon as the operator has brought the rubber pieces D and D onto the body of the instrument, then the operator releases the said parts to permit the spring G to draw the head and foot toward each other to firmly engage the roughened and beveled surfaces of the rubber pieces D and D with the body of the instrument. The rest is thus securely clamped in place on the instrument.

By the arrangement described the head B and foot C may be drawn such distances apart as to fit bodies of varying thickness, and by having the pieces D and D made of rubber or similar material they firmly contact with the body of the instrument without marring thelatter, at the same time, however, securely holding the entire chin-rest in proper position.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A chin-rest, comprising a shank made in two tubular parts slidable one on the other, a head on one of the parts provided with a rest proper, a foot on the other part, a post fixed to one of said parts and provided with a projection engaging a vertically-disposed slot in the other part, and a spring on said post for drawing the head and foot toward each other to clamp the device in place on the body of the instrument, substantially as shown and described.

2. A violin chin-rest, comprising a rest proper, a head to which said rest proper is secured, a tubular shank extending from the said head, a foot provided with a tubular shank engaging the tubular shank of the head, a post extending from said foot into the shank of the head, a spring coiled on the said post for drawing the head and foot toward each other, and elastic cushions secured to the under side oi the said head and the top of the said foot, substantially as shown and described.

A violin ehin-rest, comprising a head adapted to support at its top the rest proper, a tub nlar shank extending lron1the said head, a foot provided with a tubular shank engaging the said head-shank, a post extending from the said foot into the said tnlntlarheadshank, and a spring eoiled on the said post and resting with one end on the bottom of the said head-shank and with its other end on a pin attached to the said post, substantially as shown and described.
