Description

C. F. ALBERT.
Chin-Rest for Violins.
0,160,136, PatentedFeb.23,l875.
THE GRAPPHG C0.PHOTO.-LITH.398=41 PARK PU\CE,N.Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE,
CHARLES E. ALBERT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIN'RESTS FOR VIOLINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,] 36, dated February 23, 1875; application filed January 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs F. ALBERT, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Chin-Rests for Violins, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to so construct a chin-rest for violins that it can be readily adjusted for application to instruments of diiierent sizes; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the chin rest, and Fig. 2 a sectional view of the same.
A is the rest proper, and is made, by preference, of hard wood or l ard rubber, and of such a shape as to afford a convenient and a comfortable bearing for the performers chin. To this rest Ais secured a metal plate, B, having a number of holes, into any one of which can be adjusted a pin, 6, on a bar, D, which is adapted to and arranged to slide in a slot in the projection b at the termination of the plate B. The bar D is curved at the point y, so as to be rendered somewhat elastic, in order to permit the pin 0 to be so adjusted as to insure a firm gripe on the edge of the violin, and it is also provided at its outer end with a lip, f, which bears against one side of the violin, a pad, 00, of cork or other equivalent material secured to the rest A bearing on the opposite side of the instrument.
It will be seen that the bar D can be readily adjusted so as to make the distance between the lip f and the pad .70 accord with the thickness of the violin to which the device is attached.
It will be observed on reference to Fig. 2 that the perforated plate B has at the upper end a lip, a, to which the rest A is attached.
By this method of construction, any desired style of rest can be used with one clamping device, while the projecting lip a receives all the strain, and prevents the wrenching oil of the said rest-an accident which is very liable to occur when the strain comes directly upon the same.
I claim as my invention 1. A chin-rest for violins, in which are com bined the rest proper A and the perforated plate B, with the bar D and its pin 0, as set forth.
2. The plate B, provided at the top with a lip, a, which extends over the edge of the violin, and to which the rest A is attached, and between which and a lip, f, at the lower end of the plate B, the violin is clamped, all as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES F. ALBERT.
Witnesses .HUBERT HowsoN, HARRY SMITH.
