Description
ISAIAH H. AREY, OF BOSGAWEN, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
Letters Patent No. 104,405, dated June 21, 1870.
VIOLIN-HOLDER.
The Schedule referred to in than'. Letters Patent and making part of the name To all whom il, may concern.-
Be it known that I, lsAIAH H. Amar, of Bose-awen, in the county of Merrimao and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Violin-Holder; and I do. hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.l
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved holder. Figure 2 is a detail cross section ofthe same, taken 'through the line x z, lig. 1.
Figure 3 is a top view of the saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish au iinproved violin-holder or chin-rest for violins, which shall be so constructed asV to adapt it for holding the violin iuproper position almost without effort, and which shall at the same'time be simple in construction and easily attached to and detached from the instrument; and p It consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the holder, as hereinatter more has a hook, b', formed upon or attached to it, to hook upon the lower edge of the violin.
The left-hand side or edge of the standard B is made higher than the other` edge, as shown in tig. 1.
By this construction, the pressure of the chin causes the violin to assume the proper inclination to the right without care or effort on the part ot' the player, thus relieving the player from all thought or care with respect to the position ofthe instrument.
In the angle between the cup A and standard B is vplaced au adj ust-able foot C, which is held in place by au elastic cord connecting it to the cup A, and the left-hand end of which is lnade thicker to correspond with the greater height of the left-hand edge of the standard B,so that its lower edge may rest squarely upon the upper edge of the violin.
The foot C is pressed down upon the violin by setscrews passing down through the cup or rest A, as shown -iu figs. 1 and 3.
The upright or standard B is formed of thin layers or shavings of wood glued up in a form, as the bend can be formed in no other way.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The .cup A, made widest at the left-hand end, and concave on its upper side, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the adjustable foot C with the cup A and standard B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
-3. 'lhe standard B, constructed lsubstantially as shown and described.
` ISAIAH H. AREY.
