Description
@anni @Wim detained gratta AMOS S. GHESEBROUGH, v0l? HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 102,490, dated 3, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these vLetters Patent and making part of the same To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, Anios S. GnnsnBnoUeH, of the city and county of Hartford and State of Connec-v ticut, have.invented certain new and useful Improvements in Device for Securing the Features of a Corpse in Place; and' to enable others skilled in the `art to make and yuse the same, I will proceed to describe, referring to the drawings, iu'which the same letters indie-ate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of this invention consists of' a machine or instrument to he applied tothe head of a person, recently deceased, which, by an elastic pressure, shall adjust and keep iu place the chin, mouth, and lips, until 'the parts, havingr lost their vital heat and become 1igid,'shall retain their natural position, and so the features be preserved.
The instrument may be varied in form, but-that which is herewith presented consists of two parts or pieces of metal, a b, connected together at their extremities by elastic cords or bands c d. These pieces a b may be made of auysuitable material, as of wood,
guttapercha,'India rubber, leather, papicrmmche, orl
other solid n1`ate11'al. v
The piece a is of elongated form, and is" designed to lie across the upper and back portion of thehead, from one side to the other, the tniddle part'resting upon'that portion of the head where it begins to slope downward.
The whole piece may be slightly curved, so as to correspond somewhat, though not of necessity, closely vto the convex `shape of the head.
The middle part, where it rests most firmly on the head, may be made somewhat concave andenlarged, so asto have a saucer-like shape. In order that it mayj sit vmore -irmly inits place, it may be padded, if desirable.
The two arms of this piece, extending somewhat be' youd the sides of the head, may be of light workmanship, and more or less elastic, the extremities of each having perforations c, or otherwise itted, so that vthe elastic cords or bands o l can be passed through them.
The piece b is of siinilar'brm and structure to piece a, only smaller.
It is designed to rest on the chin, curving upward,
` extremities fitted to receive the elastic cords'or-band's c d, by which the two pieces are to be connected together.
When these two pieces are in place, vthe arms should be of such lengthas that the elastic material, which `connects their extremities together, shall not rester exert any pressure upon the 'ace of the corpse to which it is applied.
The elastic connections should have adjustments ofbuckles j, whereby they can be lengthened or shortlened, so that, by the pressure thus secured, the chin oi' the corpse can be drawn up to its natural position and held in its place until the rigidity of' the parts shall serve to preserve this position after the instrument is removed.
I believe I have thus shown the nature,- construction, and advantage of this invention, so as to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same therefrom. y
What Vl' claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patenaisy The elongated padplates a b, and adjustable elastic bandsel g1, for semn'in,r the features of a deceased per-- son'iu their natural position, substantially as set forth;
