IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,647, dated December 5, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALONZO D. MoMAsTER,

of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Slatted Spring Bed-Bottoms; and

I do hereby declare that the following is a full,

clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of a slat. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse view through one end of spring bed-bottom. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through. springbed bottom.

This invention has relation to spring bedbottoms; and consists in the novel construction of the arched ends upon which the elastic slats rest the central arched cross-bar through which the slats pass; and the peculiar construction of the slats themselves, as hereinafter described; the object being to produce a slatted spring bed-bottom combining all the desirable elasticity, with suflioient strength and firmness to prevent the impairing of the shape by long use or the break in g of the slats by strain or pressure; also to produce a more portable and convenient spring bedbottom, having elastic slats, than those now in use.

Referring to the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, A A designate the ends of a spring bed-bottom. They are arched on top from end to end, and are formed with notches or gains 1) cut at regular intervals. Between the gains b are left the elevated partitions or projections I), which are arched or rounded, as shown in the drawing. Along the top of the ends A are stretched and fastened the Imlia-rubber straps B, which pass across the gains 1). On these straps rest the ends of the longitudinal slats (J arranged directly above the gains 1) so that when pressed upon they shall sink into said gains. Across the slats and on top of the ends A are placed and secured the strips or boards D, serving to hold the slats in place. The ends A are connected together by means of the side bars E, which are strengthened by means of the transverse brace F. The ends of the straps B fit and are secured within channels cut in the ends of the bars A, so that the bed-bottom may be nicely adapted to the width of the bedstead. G represents a curved or arched bar, having notches cut at intervals and corresponding in size and shape to the slats G, which are designed to rest in said notches. The slats are made thicker at the middle than at the ends to which they gradually taper. They are thus strengthened at the point where there is least support and greater strain, and are prevented from becoming bow-shaped. A strip of wood, H, fastened to the top of the bar Gr serves to hold the latter and the slats together. The bar G is designed to he movable along the slats, and the latter may be moved in and out of their end places for convenience and portability. As many bars like Gr may be used as desired, in the same relation. The object of the strip H is to strengthen the bar G as well as to hold the slats C in position. Its strengthening qualities are advantageously exerted toward the ends ot'the bar, where the slats have a lateral edgewise pressure in order to preventthe arch from spreading. In some cases a rod, I, may be secured to the ends of the bar G and stretched across underneath it, so as to keep the arch in shape. For the same purpose a spiralspring between the middle of the bar and the brace F is useful.

The combination of the arched ends A, having the gains I) and rounded projections b, in combination with the India-rubber straps B, board D, and slats C, substantially as shown and described.
