ALONZO S. DRISKO AND ORAMANDER H. DRISKO, OF BOSTON, MASSA- OHUSETTS.
. Lette/rs Patent No. 104,944, dated July 5, 1870.
IMPROVED SLAT FOR BEDSTEADS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the seme.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that we, ALoNzo S.DR1sKo and ORA- MANDER H. DRIsKo, both of Boston, in the county of Suolkand lState of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Slats for Bedsteads, Sto., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part ot' this spec-ication, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a slat of our iluproved construction.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the center' of the same.
Our invention consists in a pair of slats, connected, by diagonal braces, with a series ot' spiral or other suitable springs applied thereto, in such manner as to produce a uniform degree of elasticity throughout the entire length of the slat, our said invention being readily adapted to most classes of bedsteads now in use.
`To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use our invention, we will proceed to describe the manner in which we have carried it out.
In the said drawing- A B represent two wooden slats, the extremities' of which are connected by cross-pieces or braces O D, in each of which is cut a notch, so that they will fit together at the center.
In each of the braces c c, between the corresponding ends of the braces G D, is placed a spiral spring, E, the base or enlarged end of which rests upon the upper inclined surface of either the lower portion a of the brace D- or that of the brace O, while the upper or small end ofthe spring presses or bears up against the under side of the brace C, or the under side ofthe portion b of the brace D.
In each ofthe spaces f f, formed between the upper and lower slats A B and braces C D, is placed a spiral spring, E, similar to that above described, the base of' each spring resting against the brace C or D, and the smaller ends-of the springs bearing against the upper and lower slats A B, thev several springs, being confined securely in their proper position by rivet-ing their extremities to the slats or braces.
h h are pieces of cloth, placed between the enlarged end of each spring and the brace or slat to which itis secured, to prevent the spring, when compressed or closed, from coming in contact with the slat or brace, and producing noise'.
We design to apply the above-described combined spring slat and brace -in a direction longitudinal with the bedstead, and place the lower slat B upon the transverse slats of an ordinary bedstead, and we secure it'in an upright position thereon by a button, vcatch, or other suitable device, fastened to the transverse cross-bars at the head and vfoot of the bedstead, the button being revolved -on its pivot and {itt-ing over tbelower ends of the two braces, and being provided with two shoulders, which are pressed snugly np against the slat and brace, thus holding them securely in the desired position. s
We prefer to give the upper slat A a slight inclination downward from the head to the foot of the bedstead';'tl1at is to say, from four to tive, the distance,
between the slats, from four to six, being,r somewhat greater than that from five to seven. rlhis may be readily done by using springs of the same strength, and placing the spring at the head a little nearer the center ot the braces than the spring at the foot; or the spring at the head may be stronger or stiffer, and remain in a position at the same distance from the center as the spring at the foot. l
It is evident that we may employ an elliptical or other suitable form of spring instead of a spiral spring, as shown; and our combined spring slats and braces may be used in a direction transversely with the bedstead without departing from the spiritvof our invention.
1t will be seen from thc foregoing construction that a uniform degree of elasticity will be insured at all points in the length of the slat, and that our invention l may be readily applied, at a very moderate cost, to
any ofthe ordinary forms of slat bedsteads now in use. Claim',
lVhat we claimas our invention, andfdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pair ofslats, A B, connected by diagonal braces C D with a series of' springs, E, applied thereto in the manner and for the purpose described.
Witness our hands this 3d day of June A D. 1870.
