.CYRUS S. STE-EENS, 0F PORTLAND, MAINE, ASSIGNOE TO I-IIMSELF AND DANIEL F. KNIGHT, OF S-AMEPLAOE.
Letters Patent-N0. 103,521, dated May 24, 1870.V
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:v
Beit'known that I, Oreos S. STEVENS, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed;- Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to makeanduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,- `forming part of this speciication.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, durable, and highlyelastic bottom for beds, and
It consists in the construction ot' the springs eine ploy-ed, and manner of attaching theslats or connecte ing them withthe springs, and in the construction of parts, as will -be hereinafter more fully described.
' In the accompanying drawing-.
Figure 1 represents a side view, showing the springs and the mode of attaching them to the slats.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the reverse side of the bottom.
Similar,v letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This bed-bottom is attached to and supported on two transverse base pieces A and B, which rest upon the side-'rails ofthe bedstead.
These 4b'ase pieces are connected together by two .or more base slats G, as seen in fig. 1.
- D represents the springs, four'of which are used for each upper Slat, the latter being marked E.
F F are `rods whichV rest on the transverse basepicces A B, to which they are confined by the springs..4
The wire which forms the spring is coiled around the rod, and its ends vare passed through the basepieces and clinched or otherwise fastened to them.
G represents two short rods near each end of the` By this arrangement Vit will be seen the springs arenot rigidly connected with the slats E, but are left free to adjust themselves according to the 'pressure on their respective slats.
T he springs D may be used without the rods G, if
desired, but I prefer the mode described.
Having thusdescribed my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl e l The improved device for forming an elastic bed-bottom, consisting of frame A B C, springs D, rolls F G H, and hooks I, all constructed and relatively arranged as described.
CYRUS S. STEVENS.
