UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD SUGDEN WILLIAMS, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
VIOLIN CHIN-REST.
Application filed September 11, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD SUGDEN WIL- LIAMS, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Violin Chin-Rests, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in violin chin rests, and the object of the invention is to rovide a chin rest for the player by whlch the violin may be supported underneath the chin, and securely held without any liability of being displaced even though the hand may but slightly hold the head of the violin.
My invention consists of a chin rest com prising a suitable base plate provided with a clamping device, and a soft compressible yet resilient top formed preferably of soft rubber and suitably held or vulcanized to the base as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1, shows a violin provided with my improvement. Fig. 2, is a detail of the chin rest.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is the base of my chin rest, which is made with a depression A at the outer end having an upwardly extending side A B is a soft flexible compressible portion of the chin rest, which is of the usual form and is vulcanized or otherwise secured to the base A.
The chin rest is made preferably of soft rubber, but itmay be made of any other suitable material, which will have equal Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 16, 1912.

qualities as to grip on the chin and the comfort of yielding to the chin when it is pressed against the rest.
The base A is provided with stems A and a turn buckle A connecting the stems with the hooks A of the usual type and whereby 'the chin rest is secured to the end of the violin.
By such a rest, as I describe, I am enabled to securely hold the violin in position under the chin with but slight exertion of the chin as it buries itself into the rest and securely holds the violin from displacement, so that but a slight exertion is necessary in order that the hand may hold the head of the violin and also allow of the fingers being practically free to manipulate the strings.
Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A chin rest for violins comprising a base and a chin rest proper formed of solid, yet soft and flexible, rubber secured to the base and designed to have an elastic grip on the chin of the user, and means for securing the base to the violin, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A chin rest for violins comprising a base having a depressed portion and edge rim, of the rest proper formed of solid, yet soft and flexible, rubber secured to the base and against the rim and designed to have an elastic grip on the chin of the user, as and for the purpose specified.
RICHARD SUGDEN WILLIAMS.
