I REED HOLDER, AND PROTECTOR FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 14, 1911.
Patented Jan. 30, 1%12.
Serial No. 649,376.
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR WVIN UIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reed Holders and Protectors for Musical Instruments, of
which the following is a specification.
' The object of this invention is to construct a holder and protector for the reed of musicalinstruments which can be readily detached from the mouthpiece of the instrument.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan View. Fig. 3 is a section on line a a Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on line a c Fig. 1. F ig." 5 is a section on line Z) Z) Fig. 1. Fig. 6 shows the ends of the band separated.
The mouth piece 1 of the musical instrument is of the usual construction. A band 2 has a central opening 3, and the ends of the band are connected by the lip 4 located in one of the slots 5. By means of the slots the band can be adjusted to fit various sized mouth pieces. A pad comprises the plate 6 which holds the felt or lining 7. A rivet 8 is connected with the plate and passes through the opening 3 in the band 2, and supports a thumb wheel 9 loosely. A coiled spring 10 has one end connected to the thumb wheel and its other end is located beneath the band. By turning the thumb wheel the spring is rotated which will cause the pad to be moved toward or away from the band. t i v The band is placed ,over the end of the V mouth piece, and the reed 12 is located in contact with the mouth piece and beneath the pad. By turning the thumb wheel, the pad is moved against the reed thereby clamping it in position in connection with the mouth piece. The pad is yieldingly sup-- ported by the band and the lining which is flexible will accommodate itself to thesurface of the reed so that it will not be forced I out of position.
It is quite essentialthat the thin end of the reed be protected against hard usageand kept moist so that it will. not split orwarp. For this purpose I haveprovided a bail 13 having its ends forme with hooks 14 which are located in openi gs 15 in the band. This bail sup orts a plate 16 which has-a depending lip 1 A'pad 18 of felt or other suitable material is connected to the plate 16. The bail is turned so that the pad 18 will rest on the free end of the reed and held in this position by the lugs 19 extending from the band. YVhen the instru ment is being played upon-the bail is turned free of the reed as shown at Fig. 1, and will. be held in this position by the lugs 20 extending from the band. The pad 18 is moistened with water which, when contacting,
with the reed will keep it moist.
I claim as my invention.
1. The combination of a mouth piece for musical instruments, a reed therefor, a band encircling the mouth piece, a pad resting on the reed, and adjusting devices connecting the pad and band. I
2. The combination of a mouth piece for, musical instruments, a reed therefor, a band encircling the mouth piece, a pad resting on the reed, a stud connected to the pad and passing through the band, a thumb wheel loosely supported by the stud and a coil spring connected to the thumb wheel and engaging the band. 1
3. The combination of a mouth piece for musical instruments, a reed therefor an adjustable band encircling the mouth piece, a pad resting on the reed, and adjusting devices connecting the pad and band.
- 4:. The combination of a mouth piece for musical instruments, a reed therefor, a band -for holding the reed in connection with the mouth 'piece, and a protector pivotally con nected to the band and adapted to cover the reed.
'5. The combination of a mouth piece for musical'instruments, a reed therefor, a band for holding the reed in connection with the mouth piece, a protector pivotally connected to the band and adapted to cover the reed, and lugs extending from the band with which the bail engages.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
