BOW-GUIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 1917.
Application filed June 23, 1916. Serial No. 105,415.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS MOLLENHAUER, citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bow- Guides, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to violins and the object thereof is to provide an attachment to serve as a guide for the bow in teaching a student to play the instrument.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification:
Figure 1. is a plan view of a position of a violin showing my improved bow guide mounted on the fingerboard thereof, the dotted lines indicating the bow.
Fig. 2. is a cross sectional view through the fingerboard and strings and illustrates the general appearance of the guide viewed from the end of the instrument.
Fig. 3. is a perspective view of the bow guide.
A indicates the body portion of a violin and A the fingerboard thereof.
B indicates a piece of spring wire bent to form a spring, the lower ends of which are held by the out turned portions CC'- CC of the clamps CC respectively.
These clamp elements are stamped from sheet metal and are preferably provided at each end with projections DDD-D which engage the edges of the fingerboard A. By reason of the hinge formation at EE the clamp elements can pivot or turn on the ends of the spring element to adjust themselves to the tapered form of the fingerboard as will be readily understood.
In use the student is instructed to draw the bow in such a manner as not to touch the guide and therefore when the bow does touch the guide, knows that his bowing is faulty and is able to correct the error more quickly than without such a guide.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new:
A bow guide comprising a spring, clamps provided with openings in which the ends of the spring element are swiveled to permit the clamps to adjust themselves to the taper edges of a violin fingerboard.
Signed at New York city, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, this 19th day of June, A. D.
