NlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY F. CRAIVFORD, OF BROOKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ROBE OR BLANKET HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561 ,376, dated June 2, 1896.
,, Application filed February 1, I896. Serial No. 577,690. (No model.)
T0 CI/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARVEY F. CRAWFORD, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Robe or Blanket Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved construction of clamp or holder adapted to be used in pairs attached to a wall or other vertical support for the purpose of suspending a carriage robe or blanket by one edge and holding the same so that its whole surface can be conveniently brushed and inspected.
The invention consists in the improved clamp or holder which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved holder. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a view showing a robe or blanket suspended by two of my improved holders.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In carrying out my invention I make a clamp or holder comprising a base portion a, having an extended flat seat a at one side adapted to bear on a flat vertical support, such as the wall of a room, and provided with screw-holes a to receive attaching-screws, the form of the seat a being such that when the device is screwed to a wall it will be rigidly supported and prevented from rocking in any 011 the side of the base opposite the seat a is formed a clamping-face a From the base, above said clamping-face, projects an overhanging arm a, which eX- tends outwardly from the base and downwardly to a point opposite the clamping-face a the arm and base forming a recess (i which is closed at its upper end and is unobstructed at the sides of the device and has a mouth or opening between the lower end of the arm and the clamping-face a Z) represents a lever, which is pivoted at Z) to the lower end of the arm a and is formed to extend across the mouth of the opening a The lever is provided with a frictional tip 19 which is adapted to exert a yielding frictional hold upon a blanket or robe interposed be tween it and the face a The said tip is a cylindrical piece of rubber forced, while compressed, into a socket b formed on the lever b, the mouth of said socket being somewhat narrower than its interior, so that the tip will expand within the socket and will be re tained firmly in place thereby, the tip projecting from the mouth of the socket.
The length of the lever b, including the tip 19 is such that the distance between the pivot b and the bearing-surface of the tip I) is greater than the width of the mouth of the recess a Hence the lever I) cannot swing downwardly over said mouth, but when at its lowest position is held substantially in the position shown in Fig. 2 by the bearing of the tip b on the seat a 0 represents a spring, which is arranged to press the lever Z) downwardly and thus hold the tip 71 in yielding contact with the seat a the spring as here shown comprising a portion which is coiled around the pivot 12 of the lever b, an end portion which bears upon the lever, and another end portion which bears upon the arm 00 The lever 19 is provided with an outwardly-projecting thumbpiece or handle I)", by which it can be raised to separate the tip 19 from the seat a or from a robe or blanket interposed between said tip and seat.
The base a is preferably provided with an inclined guiding-face a, which extends below the clamping-face a at an angle therewith, said guiding-face being adapted to guide the edge of a robe or blanket upwardly into the mouth of the opening a.
The improved device above described is used in pairs, as shown in Fig. 3, the two members of the pair being placed at a suit able distance apart upon a, wall. It will be seen that when the upper edge of a robe or blanket is pressed upwardly into the mouth of the opening a the lever 12 will yield and permit the insertion of said edge between the face a and tip 6 the spring holding the tip in engagement with the outer surface of the robe or blanket, so that it immediately ongages the latter and prevents it from drop ping from the opening (1 The two clamping devices conjointly hold the blanket in a smoothly-extended position, so that its entire outer surface can be readily brushed and in spected.
I claim A blanket clamp or holder comprising a base having at one side an extended flat seat formed to bear on a wall or other support, and perforated for the reception of attachingscrews, the opposite side of the base having a clamping-face; an overhanging arm projecting from the upper portion of the base above the clamping-face and extended downwardly to a point opposite the clamping-face, said arm and base forming an opening or recess the mouth of which is between the arm and clamping-face; a lever pivoted to the outer end of the arm, said lever extending across the mouth of said recess and having a HARVEY F. CRAW'FORD.
