Description

H. W. MERRILL. BROOM HOLD-ER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.12, 190av 933,260, Patented Sept. '7, 1909.
Snucntoz witnesses almnms HERBERT W. MERRILL, OF QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS.
BROOM-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. '7, 1909.
Application filed. August 12, 1908. Serial No. 448,199.
useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to broom holders,
the object in view being to provide a simple,
practical and convenient device for supporting brooms by their handles-to enable the lplristles of the broom to be held clear of the oor.
With the above and other obj ects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a front elevation of the broom holder, showing a broom supported thereby. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the broom holder. Fig. 3 is a side view thereof. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 5 1s a detail plan view of thedetent.
The device, which may be of any suitable size, comprises a flat base 1 with forwardly projecting fiat wings 2 extending from opposite sides of the base and located at a sufficient distance apart to receive broom handles of different sizes between the same, so that said broom handle may lie flat against the base 1. The base is provided at top and bottom with attaching ears 3 provided with screw holes 4: to receive screws or other suitable fasteners by means of which the device may be secured to a wall, partition or other vertical support. For the sake of lightness and economy in material, the base may be provided with a central opening 5 of any desired shape.
One of the wings 2 is apertured as shownat 6 to admit of the necessary movement of a pivoted detent 7 which works through said aperture and is journaled on a pivot 8 which connects a pair of oppositely arranged lu s 9 extending outward laterally from the a jacent wing 2 and located at opposite sides of the aperture 6. The'lugs 9'are connected at or near their outer ends by means of a cross bar 10 which forms a stop for limiting the initial swinging movement of the point of the detent, the detent being provided with a corresponding shoulder 11 which as it moves upward comes into contact with the cross bar or stop 10 and prevents the inner broom handle engaging point on the detent from swinging backward beyond a predetermined distance. The point of the detent is beveled as shown at 12 to bring the same to a biting edge, and such edge is also concaved as shown at 13 in Fig. 5 to conform approximately to the curvature or outer surface of the broom handle in order to obtain a more efiective hold thereon. By swinging the inner end of the detent, the broom handle may be inserted between the wings 2 so as to lie against the base 1 as indicated in Fig. 1, whereupon the detent 7 moves by gravity into biting engagement with the broom handle and thereafter sustains the broom at any desired elevation above the floor thereby preventing the bristles of the broom from resting on the floor and becoming disarranged, keeping the broom in good working condition.
I claim As an article of manufacture, a broom holder comprising a base provided with oppositely arranged attaching ears, forwardly extending wings spaced apart and arranged parallel to each other, one of said wings being apertured, oppositely arranged lugs extending outward from the apertured wing and located at opposite sides of the aperture therein, a horizontal cross bar connecting said lugs and forming a detent stop, and a detent in the form of a flat plate pivotally mounted near one of its ends between said ears and adapted to rest against the underside of said cross bar, the lnner end of said HERBERT W. MERRILL.
