UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC ASHLEY J. GULICH AND WILLIAM T. HUMPHREY, OF CLE'ARFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
BROOM-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,563, dated May 2,1893.
Application filed March 8, 1892. Serial No. 424,174. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, ASHLEY J. GULIO and WILLIAM T. HUMPHREY, citizens of the 'United States, residing at Olearfield, in the county of Olearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Broom- Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in broom-holders, and consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
The object of this invention is to provide a device of this character having a simple and effective construction and arrangement, the parts being strong and durable, easily and readily handled, and placed in position for service.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is'a perspective view of the improved broom-holder, showing a part of a broom-handle in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of thedevice. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line QJ-w, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a bracket or frame having eyes in the side-portions thereof for the insertion of screws or other securing devices, whereby said bracket may be secured in position. The lower part of said bracket A has projecting therefrom at a right angle a plate or lip B, and extending outward from the upper part of said bracket are ears 0 which receive a lug D, formed with a loop or slotted plate E. A pintle or pivot-pin passes through said ears and lug to thereby permit the said loop or slotted plate to have free movement outward from and toward the said bracket. The said loop or slotted plate E is formed with a large opening F, adjacent to the lug D thereof, which converges into a narrower retaining-slot G, at the free end of said loop or slotted plate. The side-walls of said opening F are straight or nearly so, while those of the slot G are beveled as at g to form abiting edge 9' which takes into the broom-handle and thereby prevents the same from slipping from the loop.
When the broom-handle is in position in the slot G of the loop or slotted plate E, as shown in Fig. 1, the weight of the broom draws said loop or slotted plateE down toward the plate or lip 13 which bears against the adjacent side of the broom-handle and provides additional means for preventing said handle from disengaging itself from the said loop or plate E, by preventing the handle from slipping from the side slot G toward the opening E if a broom should be accidentally struck while in suspended position.
The advantage of this form of device is readily apparent to those skilled in the art and it will. be understood that it can be made from suitable metal or in anymanner desired and provided with suitable ornamentation.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is In a broom holder, the combination of a bracket having a lower plate or lip integrally formed therewith and projecting horizontally therefrom, and a loop or slotted plate having the upper end thereof pivotally connected to the upper part of said bracket and formed with a large opening near the pivotal point thereof which converges into a narrower retaining slot atthe free end of the same, said loop or slotted plate being of such length as to bear against the outer' edge of the said plate or lip and extend downward below the latter and having the walls of the said retaining slot beveled to form upper biting edges to engage the handle of the broom, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
