' B. F. PASGOE. NAPK IN HOLDER.
No. 541,384. Patented June 18, 1895 V A TTMIIEA UNrT-ED STATES PATIENT OFFIC BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PASOOE, OF GLOBE, ARIZONA TERRITORY.
NAPKlN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,384, dated June 18, 1895.
Application filed February 18, 1895. Serial No. 538,787. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PASCOE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Globe, county of Gila, and Territory of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Napkin-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention relates to napkin holders, and has for its object to provide a simple device which can be easily and cheaply constructed and which is entirely free from complicated and intricate parts.
\Vith these and other ends-in view, the invention contemplates two members, each of which consists of a plate bent upon itself and having the ends of said bent portions so curved and arranged that they will conjointly constitute a spring; a hook on one member by means of which the device, and the napkin carried thereby, are suspended, and ears formed on each plate through which passes a pivot pin and thereby pivotally secures the two members together.
My invention consists also of the particular construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved napkin-holder as it appears when in use. Fig. 2 illustrates the device applied to a folded napkin, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line x m of Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention, I prefer to strike up the two members, which, for convenience I will hereinafter call the upper and lower member respectively, from a single sheet of metal. The upper member A is longer than the lower member B and has one end provided with a hook at by means of which the device may be suspended, as shown in Fig. 1. Each member consists of a plate which is bent upon itself and arranged close to the main portion of the plates a a, so that said bent portions 1) b, will form with the main portions two substantial jaws 0 adapted to receive a napkin between the same. The ends 0 c, of the bent portions b, b are curved in such a way that they will lie in contact or bear against each other and thus form aspring which maintains the jaws rigidly clasped upon the napkin. Ears D are provided upon the members through which a pivot pin (1 passes and thereby pivotally secures the said members together.
In order that the jaws may take firm hold of the napkin I prefer to roughen or serrate the contact faces thereof as shown in Fig. 0.
. The operation of my improved napkin what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article ofmanufacture, a napkin holder, comprising two members pivotally secured together, the ends of said members being bent within the main portions thereof to form jaws and arranged to bear against each other at the rear of the pivot pin, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A napkin holder, comprising two members, a hook formed on one member, the ears upon said members, a pivot pin passing through said ears and pivotally securing the members together, each of said members being bent closely upon itself to form jaws, the free ends of said bent portions being curved to bear against each other at the rear of the pivot pin and thereby constitute a spring to hold the jaws upon the napkin, substantially as described.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 8th day of February, 1895.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PASCOE.
