B. BARNARD.
CHECK LOOP.
No. 398,764. Patented Feb. 26, 1889.
$513 @Wiozmmgo UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD BARNARD, OF R NEW YORK- CHECK-LOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,764, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed November 16, 1888- Serial No. 291,058. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD BARNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in (hecln-ein-Iloops, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in clieckrein-holders5 and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the loop embodying my improvements attached to the end of a checkrein. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the metallic ring to show the means for securing the flexible loop thereto. Fig. 3 a similar view of the flexible loop. Fig. I is a view illustrating the application of the improved loop to a double check-bar.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A des' ignates the portion of a checkrein shown in Fig. l, to the rearend of which is attached the metallic ring I which may be either rectangular, as shown in the drawings, or of any other preferred shape, and U representsaflat vertical ear or plate, which is attached to the rear side of the said ring, the car being preferably equal in width to the flexible loop D, whose free ends are placed, respectively, on opposite sides thereof. Forwardlyturned hooks or tongues E E are arranged on the op posite sides of the ear (I, which pass through perforations (I (Z in the free ends of the loop I), the free ends of the said hooks or tongues bearing firmly on the outer surface of the loop to prevent its ends from slipping out of place and lmeoming detached. These blocks or tongues are lin-et'erably bent toward each other or clinched to bear on the loop after the perforations in the latter have been engaged therewith.
The free ends of the flexible loop are also provided with notches e c,which engage the rear side of the ring B and n-event the loop from turning at an angle to the plane of the ring.
The flexible loop designed tobe engaged with the check-hook, and it is the peculiar manner of attaching the said loop to the ring that constitutes my invention. The ring, however, is used only with a single checkrein, as will be understood, and when a double checkrein is needed a bar, G, as shown in Fig. l, is employed, the said bar being provided near its ends with. the rings H H, for the attachment of the checkrein, and at its center with the ear having the hooks, as above described.
As my present invention resides merely in the manner of attaching the flexible loop to the eheckrein ring or bar, I do not desire to limit myself to the use of either the single ring or the bar, as the said parts are analogous an "i interchangeable.
llaving thus described the invention, I claim 1.. In a checkreindoop, the Hat ear C, having a checkrein ring or bar attached thereto and provided with forwardly or inwardly turned hooks or tongues, and the flexible loop bearing at its ends against opposite sides of the said ear and provided with perforations engaging the hooks or tongues, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The plate or car C, having a checkrein ring or bar attached to its front end and provided with the hooks or tongues E E, and the loop D, bearing at its ends against opposite sides of the plate or ear 0 and provided with the perforations (Z- (I, engaging the said hooks or tongues, and also with notches e e, engaging the rear side of the said checkrein ring or bar, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described checkrein hook or bar having a flat plate or ear provided on opposite sides with integral hook-shaped points or tongues E E, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD BARNARD.
