UNITED STATES PATENTOFFICE.
JOHN S. SMITH, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT lN DEVICES FOR SECURING BLANKETS T0 HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,902, dated August 26, 1879; application filed January 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. SMITH, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing a Blanket to a Horse; .and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters 'of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and effective means for securing a blanket upon a harnessed horse in such manner that While the blanket Will be held in place with sufficient force to .resist the action of the wind, it (the blanket) can be readily detached by the driver or other person.
In the drawing, A represents a portion of a blanket having attached thereto a link, B b b. This link is made of wire, bent into the de- I sired shape, and having one end formed into an open eye or hook, I), the other end, I), bein g pointed, so as to readily pierce the blanket, and of such length as to engage with the hook I) and be thereby retained upon said blanket, asfiwill be readily understood.
The other part of the device consists of a clasp having two legs, 0 0, attached to the link by means of an eye, 0. This clasp is made of a single piece of bent wire, the legs being of such shape as will adapt them to straddle a trace or tug of the harness, or such other part or strap of the harness asmay be in the most convenient position relative to the point at which the link is attached to the blanket when the blanket is on the horse.
Although I prefer to make this device of wire bent into the desired shape, yet under some circumstances I .may make it of sheet metal by striking or swaging it into the proper form or forms.
What I claim is- The herein-described device for securing a blanket upon a horse, consisting of link B b b, in combination with the clasp c 0, depending from one end of the link, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. SMITH.
