BACK-BAND BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,624, dated July 21, 1885.

Application filed March 17, 1885.

Be it known that I, FRANK MELLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sumter, in the county of Sumter, and State of South Carolina,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Band Buckles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has relation to harness for use on farms, and more particularly to the 0011- struction of the buckle used on the belly-band; and the object is to provide a buckle of this kind for securing the said band, and at the same time holding the trace-chain in proper posit-ion upon the animal; and to these ends the novelty'consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts of the same as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.

Figure 1 is aplan view of my improved buckle, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the position of the buckle on the harness when on the animal.

A is the frame or casting of the buckle, and it is provided with apivoted orhinged tongue, B, having a series of teeth, 0, for securing the buckle to the back-bandD, and E is a loop into which the belly-band is secured when adjustedto the animal.

F is a rigid hook, formed integral with the.

frame and projecting outward and upward, so as to receive and support the trace-chain.

G is a leaf or fiat spring, which presses outwardly against the inner point of the hook and retains the link of the chain in position; and from this description it will be seen that the buckle holds and supports the back-band and trace'chain while either or both are being adjusted.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
