Description

J. STRAUS.
Back-Band Hooks,
PatengedJufie 3. 1873.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAGOB STRAUS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BACK-BAND HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,524, dated June 3, 1873; application filed March 8,1873.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, JAOOB STRAUS, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and in the Sta-te of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Back-Band Buckle and Hook Combined; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specitication, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bnckle as applied to a back-band` and Fig'. 2 is a vlertical central section of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The object of my invention is to increase the efficiency and case of adjustment of the device employed for attaching traces to, and suspendin g the same from the back-band of a harness; and it consists, as a new article of manufacture in the combined buckleand hook` substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A and A represent l two straight bars arranged in parallel lines,
and connected together at their ends by means of two cross-bars A' which have the form seen in Fig. 1. Extending between the longitudinai centers of the Vertical portions of the bars A' is a bar, B, upon the forward side of which are provided a number of pointed spurs, b, that are arranged at equidistant points thereon, and extend horizontall;r forward. From the lower side of the lower bar A near its ends, two bars C extend downward and toward each other and uniting, extend forward, upward, and then rearward in a curve, so as to form a book, C'.
The device is now complete, and is used as follows: The back-band D provided with sevfl eral rows of holes d, which correspond in relative positions to the like features of the spurs b is passed between the barsA and B, and removed longitudinally until one row of said holes d coiucide with and pass over said spurs b. The ring or chain of the trace is now passed over the hnok C' in the usual manner. To change the position vertically of the traoe, the buckle is grasped in one hand, the back-band is bent rearward and then pushed forward, so as to release it from the spurs, after which said buckle is raised or lowered to the desired position, and secured as before.
It will be seen that the relative positions of the bars A A and B enable the strap to be passed between the same without bendiug, by which means the adjustment of said strap is rendered more easy and its durability increased.
The device thus constructed is simple, cheap and efficient, and can be adjusted to position with ease and rapidity.4
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim is- -Y The combined buckle and hook described, in which the bars A A and B, and spurs b are so arranged as to enable the back-band strap when engaged therewith to occupy a straight line, substantially as and for the purpose specified. ,4
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of February, 1873.
