BELT-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,512, dated November 14, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ZARDA FROST, of Kinniundy, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belt-Stretchers, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description. v The object of my invention is to furnish an instrument for bringing the ends of belts together, more especially for use in stretching and buckling the straps of elevating-canvases of harvesting-machines.
To that end my invention consists in a tool having a hook-ended blade and provided with end of the belt, as hereinafter set forth.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which the improved instrument is shown by a perspective view.
A is the blade of the instrument, fitted to a handle, B, of suitable form. The blade is preferably straight, and atits outer end is formed with a hook, a.
O G are the pivoted arms, attached to the blade by a rivet at b, and which bend outward, so that their outer ends stand apart a suitable width. The outer ends of arms 0 are provided with hooks d (1, adapted for taking hold upon the buckle; or they may be otherwise shaped to catch the end of a belt.
In using the instrument the hook a of the blade is to be caught in the second hole of the strap. The arms 0 are then turned back toward the handle B and their ends caught in the buckle. Then, by turning the handle and blade over, the strap and buckle are brought together, so that they can be readily connected; or, in case of a belt, the ends can be fastened by the usual devices.
This instrument is of inexpensive construction, and with it the work named can be done quickly and readily.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- In belt-stretchers, the combination of hookended blade A and pivoted hooks (J 0, substantiall y as described, for use in the manner specified.
