Be it known that I, ORIsrEN SEvnRNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mohawk Village, in the county of Coshocton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Halter and Bridle, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to halters and bridles; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall be constructed mainly of metal, the same being composed principally of link-bars and buckles suitably connected with each other and with a crown-strap and a nose-strap, the two latter being preferably made of leather to provide for the necessary adjustment of the parts.

The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of embodiment of the invention,it being understood, however, that I do not necessarily limit myself to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but reserve the right to such changes, alterations, and modifications as come fairly within the scope of the invention and which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the utility of the same.

In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the bridle of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the link-bars employed in the construction of the device. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the member which constitutes the throat-latch.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated by similar numerals of reference.

In the construction of my improved device are included three pairs of link-bars, which may be designated, respectively, the cheekbars, the throat-bars, and the jaw-bars. These several bars are constructed of malleableiron,eachconsisting,preferably,ofaround bar of suitable length and curvature and each provided at both ends with hook members, the points of which by pressure exerted in any suitable manner or by blows of an ordinary hammer may be folded down upon the body Serial No. 196,401. of the bar to constitute connecting-eyes. In the drawings the cheek-bars have been designated 1 1, the throat-bars 2 2, and the jawbars 3 3, the hook members at each end of each of said bars being designated 4.

5 designates the crown-strap, which is made, preferably, of leather and which is provided at each end with a plurality of perforations 6 for engagement with the tongues 7 of suitablyconstructed buckles 8, the frames of whichare connected with the upper ends of the cheekbars in the manner describedthat is, by inserting the ends of the buckle-frames into the hook members 4: and compressing the latter to form eyes, whereby flexible connection between the upper ends of said cheek-straps and the buckle-frames will be established.

These buckles, which are horizontally disposed, as shown, are connected by means of the slotted extensions at their upper edges with the lower ends of the cheek-bars 1. said buckles being mutually connected by the nosestrap 12, which is provided at each end with a plurality of perforations 13 for engagement with the tongues of the buckles.

14 designates the member constituting the throat-latch, the same consisting of a shank 15, provided at its upper end with a ring 16 and at its lower end with a ring 17 which is spanned on its under side by an arched crossbar 18, which is disposed in alinement with the stem or shank 15. A ring 16 is provided at its upper end with an enlargement 19.

2O 2O designate a pair of snap-hooks which are connected with the frames of the buckles 8, said snap-hooks being also provided with slots 21, whereby they are flexibly connected with the upper ends of the throat-bars 2 2. The lower ends of the latter are connected with the rim 16 of the throat-latch member at opposite sides of the enlargement 19, which latter serves to space the throat-bars apart. The jaw-bars 3 3 are connected at their inner ends with the ring 17 of the throat-latch member and at their outer ends with the frames of the buckles 9.

As much of the device as has been thus far described constitutes a halter which may be readily fitted upon the heads of horses or cattle, the crown-strap and the nose-strap providing for the necessary adjustment, which enables the halter to be fitted upon the heads of animals of different sizes, a lead-rope 22 being connected with the arched bar 18,which extends across the lower ring 17 of the throatlatch member.

To complete the bridle, I provide a bit-bar 23, of malleable iron, connected at its ends with hook members engaging the bit-rings 24:, with which the bit-bar is connected by compressing the hook members upon said rings. The latter, which are likewise constructed of malleable iron, are connected at their upper ends with hook members 25, engaging slots 26, formed upon the shanks of snap-hooks 27, which latter engage the slotted extensions at the lower edges 01 the frames of the buckles 9. This construction, it Will be readily observed, permits of the bit being instantly attached to the halter, which will be thereby transformed into a bridle. The bit, as will be readily understood, may be disconnected from the halter at one end and remain attached thereto at the other end while the animal is being fed, and loss or displacement of the bridle will thus be prevented, or the bridle may be entirely detached whenever desired and temporarily connected by the snap-hooks with any desired portion of the halter or harness.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The construction is extremely simple, and the constituent parts of the combined halter and bridle may be supplied to the trade or to the eventual purchaser in a disconnected state, said parts being capable of being easily and quickly assembled to form the finished article. The latter may be placed in position upon or removed from the head of the animal by simply manipulating one of the snap-hooks 20.

The device while light is possessed of great strength, and the metallic parts may be galvanized or otherwise protected against oxidation.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In aheadstall, athroat-latch member consisting of a bar or shank having a ring at its upper end and provided at its lower end with an arched cross-bar in alinement with the shank, the ring at the upper end of the latter being provided with a centrally-disposed enlargement at the upper portion thereof, in combination With a pair of throat-bars having malleable hooks connected with the upper ring at opposite sides of the enlargement, a pair of jaw-bars having malleable hooks connected with the lower arm at opposite sides of the central arched bar, snap-hooks connected with malleable hooks at the outer endsof the throatbars, buckle members connected with malleable hooks at the outer ends of the jaw-bars, a crown-strap having buckle members connected with the snap-hooks, cheek-bars having malleable hooks connected with the buckle members of the crown-strap and those at the front ends of the jaw members, respectively,

and a nose-strap connecting the latter buckle members.

2. In a bridle, the combination of a pair of throatbars,a pair of jaw-bars,a pair of checkbars, a pair of snap-hooks,two pairs of buckles, and a throat-latch member having at its upper end a ring provided with a central enlargement and at its lower end a ring spanned by an arched bar,all of said members being linked together as hereindescribed, a crown-strap adjustably connecting one pair of buckles at the upper ends of the cheek-bars, and a nosestrap adjustably connecting the other set of buckles at the lower ends of the cheek-bars.
