Description

PATENTED MAY 19, 19 08.
vNo. 887,862.
J. SPANGBNBERG.
HALTER.
APPLIOATION FILED JULY15, 1907.
UNITED STATES JOHN SPANGENBERG, OF GILMAN, IOWA.
HALTER.
Application filed July 15,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SPANGENBERG, citizen of the United States, residing at Gilman, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Halters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to halters, and consists in the peculiar and advantageous construction hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of a halter constructed in accordance-with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the metallic connector comprised in my improvements, and: Fig. 3 is a plan view of the said connector.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:
A is the head stall of my novel halter. B B are the cheek pieces of the halter; C, the nose piece, and D the jaw piece. The ends of the head stall A are preferably connected to the upper ends of the cheek pieces B through metallic rings E, while the lower ends of the cheek pieces B are preferably connected to the adjacent ends of the nose piece 0 and j aw piece D through metallic loops F, as illustrated.
Connected to and extending rearward from the rings E are throat straps G which, as will be readily apparent, are comparatively short and may therefore be made of short pieces of leather or other suitable stock, and connected with the jaw piece D, preferably through the medium of the conventional interlocked rings H and I, is a chin strap J. This chin strap J is also quite short and may therefore, like the throat straps G, be formed of a small piece of leather or other stock suitable for use in a halter.
M is my novel connector which is prefer ably cast or otherwise formed of suitable metal. The said connector is designed to serve in connection with the throat straps G and the chin strap J in forming a strong and durable throat latch; and it is made up of eyes m for the connection of the throat straps G, and a longitudinal central bar n extending between the eyes m and designed to rest in a loop 20 at the upper end of the chin strap J as clearly shown in Fig. 1. As illustrated in Fig. 1 and more definitely in Fig. 3, the eyes m of the connector M are disposed at obtuse Specification of Letters Patent.

angles to the bar n thereof, this in order to enable the connector to more comfortably fit the throat of the animal wearing the halter.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that a halter embodying my invention is susceptible of being expeditiously and easily produced, that small pieces of leather or other suitable stock may be utilized to advantage in the construction of the throat latch, and that the halter as a whole is sightly in appearance and at the same time is strong and therefore well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which halters are ordinarily subjected. It will further be gathered from the foregoing that by virtue of the longitudinal central bar n of the connector M being straight and of a greater length than the loop 7) of the chin strap J is wide, the said loop p is free to play upon the said bar n, and in consequence the halter when in use will subject the animal to no discomfort.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,
The herein described halter consisting essentially of a head stall, cheek pieces connected with the head stall, a nose piece connected with the cheek pieces, a jaw piece also connected with the cheek pieces, a chin strap con nected with the jaw piece and having a loop at its upper end, throat straps connected with and extending rearward from the head stall and cheek pieces and having loops at their rear ends disposed at opposite sides of the said loop of the chin strap, and a connector formed of a single piece of stiff material and having a longitudinal central, intermediate bar it resting in the loop at the upper end of the chin strap; the said bar '17. being straight and of a greater length than the loop of the chin strap is wide, whereby said loop is free to play upon said bar in the direction of the length of the latter, and also having end eyes disposed at obtuse angles to the bar a, whereby they are adapted to comfortably fit the throat of an animal, and further having the outer end bars of the said eyes loosely arranged in the loops at the rear ends of the throat straps.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN SPANGENBERG. Witnesses:
J. W. ALDEN, H.-D. STEWART.
