COMBINATION BAR AND JOINT BIT. APPLIOATION FILED AUG. 9,1904.

COMBINATION BAR AND JOINT BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 794,681, dated July 11, 1905.
Application filed August 9, 1904. Serial No. 220,141.
To (all wiwnt zit may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Omaha. in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combination Bar and Joint Bits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved combination bar and joint bit.
The aim of my invention is to provide a bit so constructed that a pull upon the same may be carried below the gap of the horses mouth, so that the horse cannot grab the bit in his teeth, the bit being further so constructed that itis carried away from the teeth, so that these are not nicked or bruised.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 1 a top view disclosing my combination joint and bar bit. Fig. 2 discloses a side view thereof, while Fig. 3 shows a view partly in section. Fig. 4. is a side view of one of the bit members.
My joint and bar bit comprises the main bar A, which is perforated at each end so as to pivot upon a pin 5 at each end, which pin forms part of a cheek-plate B, there being two such cheek-plates used in connection with my invention. At the point where the perforated ends of the bar A are held these cheekplates B are provided with suitable openings 6, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. By means of these pins 6 these cheek-plates B freely pivot upon the bar A. Each cheek-plate B is provided with a terminal loop 7, to which loop 7 is secured the chin-strap b by means of its recurved ends 3, this chin-strap being disclosed in Fig. 1. Freely sliding upon the bar A is a union 1, provided with the loop 2 and the terminal loops 3, the loops 3 extending in a plane at right angles to a plane passing through the loop 2. Secured to the loops 3 are the ends 5 of the joint-bit, comprising the two similar members C, which members are pro-- vided with the looped ends 0 to receive the rings 4, to which the bridle-straps are secured.
These joint-bit members C extend through a slot 5' within the cheek-plates B, as is shown in Fig. 2, two such openings 5 being shown, which are separated by means of the cheek portion a. This second slotis provided merely for the sake of appearance and lightness. These joint-bit members C, as shown in Fig. 4:, are slightly curved and are permitted a slight lateral movement in working through the openings 5, the union 1 being, as described, slidably held upon the bar A, so that a bit is provided which when the operator pulls upon the lines causes the two bit members to be carried out of their relatively horizontal position into a vertical position, sothat the pull upon the bit has a tendency to open the horses mouth, bringing the strain upon the bit a certain distance below the gap of the horses mouth, in which position the bit forms powerful levers in the horses mouth, so that the animal may be easily controlled.
This device may be made of various sizes and odors a further advantage in that it does not double the tongue at the root. In shortening the jaw-strap this bit may be used as a curb-bit, to be used both for saddle and harness purposes.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
In a bridle-bit the combination with a main bar, of slotted cheek-plates pivotally connected to said bar, a loop extending from each cheek-plate, a member slidably held upon said bar and having two terminal loops, and two bit-bars each provided with a strapring, said bars each extending through the slot of one of said cheek-plates and being movably connected to the terminal loops of said slidablyheld member, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I mix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' CHARLES W. PHILLIPS.
