BRIDLE-BIT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LINDSEY HARVEY, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Norris, in the county of Scott and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridle-Bits, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bridle bits, the object being to provide a bit which is so constructed that when applied to an unruly horse, the horse can be readily controlled without injuring his mouth in any way.

Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a bit which is provided with pivotally mounted side frames carrying levers which are connected together by a curb and to which the reins are adapted to be connected so that when both reins are drawn on, the inner ends of the levers will be thrown into engagement with the jaws of the animal in such a manner that a perfect curb will be formed so that the horse can be readily controlled.

Another object of the invention is to so mount the side frames which carry the levers that when one rein is pulled its associated side frame will swing outwardly, so as to prevent the lever from being thrown into engagement with the jaw of the animal, whereby the animal can be readily guided in the ordinary manner.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a bit which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which is composed of a very few parts which are so arranged and connected together that all danger of the parts becoming accidentally detached is prevented, and at the same time a bit is formed which is very neat in appearance.

With these objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bit showing the same arranged in position on a horse. Fig. 2 is a perspective ,view of the same detached. Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the levers detached.

provided with open eyes A at its ends, which are adapted to be pivotally mounted on the vertical bars B of curved side frames B, which are provided with loop portions B to which the cheek pieces C, of the bridle C, are adapted to be connected for supporting the bit in the ordinary manner.

The frames B are provided with vertical pivots D, on which are pivotally mounted levers E which are provided with curved enlarged inner ends E carrying rings E which are connected together by a curb strap F, said curved enlarged ends being provided with grooves E in which the strap covered portions of the ring E are adapted to be normally held and said curved enlarged portions are formed of such a shape that when thrown into engagement with the jaw of the horse, the jaw of the animal will not be injured in any way. The frames B are provided with loop portions at their rear ends B through which straps G are adapted to pass which are pivotally connected to loops I-I, pivotally mounted in the outer ends of the levers E, and said straps G are provided with rings G, at their free ends to which are adapted to be connected reins I.

It will be seen that by this construction when both of the lines are pulled on, the inner ends of the two levers will be forced into engagement with the jaw of the animal, in such a manner that the animal can be easily controlled without bruising or cutting the mouth in any way.

By mounting the frames on the ends of the mouth-piece of the bit proper, they are allowed to swing freely so that when one rein is pulled in order to guide the animal the frame will swing outwardly in such a manner that the lever will be thrown out of engagement with the jaw of the horse. lVhen both reins are pulled on, the curb strap connecting the levers prevents the frames from spreading so that both of the levers are thrown into engagement with the jaw of the horse at the same time.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a bridle bit which is so constructed that when placed on an animal, it will not be necessary to exert any strength on the reins to control the animal as a slight pressure on the reins will cause the levers to be thrown into engage ment with the jaw in such a manner that the animal can be readily controlled.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A bridle bit comprising a mouth bar having eyes at its ends, side frames pivotally mounted in said eyes, levers mounted i in said side frames having enlarged inner ends, a curb strap connecting said ends, and straps carried by the outer ends of said 1evers to Which the reins are adapted to be connected. 7

2. A bridle bit comprising a mouth bar having eyes at its ends, side skeleton frames provided With vertical bars mounted in said eyes, said side frames having loops to Which the cheek pieces of the bridle are adapted to be connected, levers mounted in said side frames having their inner ends connected together by a curb strap, and straps carried by the outer ends of said levers extending through said frames and to Which the reins are adapted to be connected.

3. A bridle bit comprising a mouth bar having eyes at its ends, curved side frames provided With Vertical bars pivotally mounted in said eyes, loops formed on said frames for securing a bit, vertical pivots arranged in said frames, levers mounted on said pivots provided With enlarged curved inner ends carrying rings, a curb strap connecting said rings, said frames having openings formed at their rear ends, loops carried by the outer ends of said levers, straps connected to said loops extending through the openings of the side frames, and reins connected to said straps.

4. A bridle bit comprising a pair of side frames provided With vertical bars, a mouth bar provided With eyes at its ends mounted on the bars of said side frames, levers piv otally mounted in said side frames and to the outer ends of Which are connected reins eX- tending through the side frames, said levers being provided With curved enlarged end portions, and provided With grooves in their curved faces, rings carried by said le-- vers, and a curb strap connecting said rings adapted to be seated in said grooves.
