UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.-
WILLIAM JONES, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MARTHA E. BARRON, OF SAME PLACE.
SLEEVE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,522, dated I)eeember 20, 1892.
Application filed April l5, 1892. Serial No. 429,279. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM JONES, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sleeve-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My improvement consists in the use of a spring clip, mad e preferably of metal, to which two ribbons, or other pliable cords, are connected in such manner that when the clip is attached to the sleeve, one of the ribbons on being pulled will tighten the clip onto the sleeve, While a pull on the other ribbon will open the clip and release the sleeve.
The object of this invention is to afford a means of drawing on an overgarrnent without disarranging the sleeve of the undergarment, or pushing it up the arm.
The operation consists in clamping the clip on the sleeve of the coat or other undergarment and taking the tightening ribbon in the hand, draw on the overgarment pulling the sleeve of the undergarinent down as far as desired by the tightening ribbon, then a pull on the other ribbon releases the clip and draws it out of the sleeve.
Figure I is a perspective view of the sleeve holder. Fig. II is a sectional view of the holder, and shows the method of attaching the ribbons thereto.
The holder consists of a clip made of two arms l and 2 so curved at their ends that they meet as at 3, and having Iiange plates 4 through which the pivot 5 extends, and in which it has its bearings. Around the pivot 5 there is a coil spring 6 the expansion ends of which tend to separate the arms l and 2 back of the pivot 5, thereby pressing them to- `gether at the point 3. This spring is provided to hold the clip in position while adjusting the ribbons in the hand.
` 7 and 8 are small rods that pass between the flange plates 4.
9 is the tighteningribbon and is first passed around the rod 7, which is attached to the flange plates of the arm l, it then passes under the rod 8, which is attached to the arm 2 in the same inanneras7is attached to l. The ribbon 9 then passes along the arm 2 and through a hole or slot ll, at its straight end. It is evident that when the ribbon 9 is pulled it Will have a tendency to draw the rods 7 end S together, thereby clamping the arms 1 and 2 together at the point 3.
10 is the releasing ribbon and is first passed through the hole or slot 12 in the arm l and then through the hole or slot Il in the arm 2, so when l0 is pulled the arms 1 and 2 sepa rate at the point 3.
In the description 9 and 10 have been referred to as ribbons, but I do not Wish to coniine myself to the exclusive use of them as any other form of cord would answer the purpose an Well.
I claim as my invention:-
l. The combination, in a sleeve holder, of the spring clip with the rods 7 and 8, and the tightening and releasing ribbons 9 and I0 connected to said spring clip, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a sleeve holder, of
the spring c1ip,the pivot rod 5 and coil spring i 6 mounted on said rod 5; saidspring having its pressure ends to expand the operative arms of the clip, the flange plates 4, the rods 7 and S secured thereto, and the ribbons 9 and l0 to respectively effect the closure and release of the clip.
WILLIAM JONES.
