UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
JOHN DORSCH, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
covER-HoLDr-:R FOR DINNER-PAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 433,452, dated August 5, 1890.
Application led February l2, 1890. Serial No. 340,158.
(No model.)
.To f/.ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DORSCH, of Ta-l coma, in the county of Pierce and State of Vashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cover-Holders for Dinner- Pails; and I dohereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication;
My invention relates to improvements in dinner-pails; and it pertains to a device for holding the cover of the pail, or the cover of a secondary apartment or receptacle which is located in the upper part of the pail, in place.
The construction of myimprovement is explained by reference to the accompanying' drawings, in which-f Figure l represents a vertical section of the pail provided with my improved cover` holding` device. Fig. 2 represents a side view of my device in connection with the pail and the cover of the secondary apartment or receptacle, which is supported in the ordinary way in the upper part ot' the pail. Fig. 3 is a modified form of my device in connection with an ordinary pail and pail-cover.
Like parts are represented by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.l
A represents the ordinary pail provided with bail-supporting ears B and handle or bail C.
D is a secondary receptacle or apartment, which is supported in the upper portion of the pail A by contact of its supporting-bearings E with the upper edge of the pail. i
When the receptacle D is used, my device is used to hold the cover F of such receptacle in place onit, while at the same time it also serves to hold said receptacle firmly in place within the mouth of the pail.
My device for holding the covers of either the pail or secondary receptacle in place consists in retaining-hooks H H, which are formed by a continuation or extension of the lower ends of the bail or handle C, which lower ends pass inwardly through the respective I j i l pail for holding the cover thereon, it becomes ears B from their outsides in the ordinary manner, when they are carried upward above the upper edge ot' the cover F and en gage upon the horizontal outwardly-projecting bearings G G. The bearings G Gmay, if desired, be formed of a single piece of wire, as shown in Fig. l, which isV centrally affixed to the cover..
Vhen my device is used in connection with a secondary receptacle D, which extends above the upper edge of the pail, the ears B are in that case attached to the upper edge of the pail in the ordinary place, as the additional height of the receptacle D is suiiicient to provide the required space for the hooks l-I between the ear and the bearings G. Vhen, iowever, my device is used with an ordinary necessary to drop the ears B a slight distance below the upper edge of the bail, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the required space is provided for the retaining hooks or bends -I^I. It is obvious that by this arrangement of the bail or handle C said hooks H are adapted, as said bail is brought into the horizontal position for carrying the pail, that said hooks H are thereby caused to engage upon the coverretaining bearings G, thereby holding said covers upon the pail when the pail is being carried; also, that by throwing said bail or handle C over ili the horizontal position said hooks H are thereby disengaged from the removed.
What I claim as new, by Letters Patent, is-
l. In-a dinner-pail, the combination, with the pail provided with bail-receiving ears, of a swinging bail inserted pivotally in the ears and having upwardlyturned ends formed into hooks at their extremities, and a cover provided with lateral projections adapted to be engaged bail, substantially as described.
2. The combination ot' the pail A, secondary receptacle D, provided with supporting bearings or fiange E and cover F, horizontal .projecting rods or bearings G, affixed to said and desire to secure by the hooks on the ends of the cover F, ears B, afxed to said body A, and In testimony whereof l axmy signature in bail or handle C, the lower ends of said bail presence of-tWo Witnesses. or handle C being looped through said ears B,
and provided with upwardly-extending hooks JOHN DORSCH. 5 H, adapted to engage upon said horizontal Witnesses:
cover-retaining bearings G, all substantially v H. C. PATRICK,
as and for the purpose specified. ROYAL L. SWEANY-
